Surah Yunus, Verse 100

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ أَن تُؤْمِنَ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَجْعَلُ ٱلرِّجْسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not كَانَ kāna is لِنَفْسٍ linafsin for a soul أَن an to تُؤْمِنَ tu'mina believe إِلَّا illā except بِإِذْنِ bi-idh'ni by (the) permission ٱللَّهِ ۚ l-lahi (of) Allah وَيَجْعَلُ wayajʿalu And He will place ٱلرِّجْسَ l-rij'sa the wrath عَلَى ʿalā on ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who لَا lā (do) not يَعْقِلُونَ yaʿqilūna use reason

Transliteration

Wama kana linafsin an tu/minailla bi-ithni Allahi wayajAAalu arrijsaAAala allatheena la yaAAqiloon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

It is not for any soul to believe save by the permission of Allah. He hath set uncleanness upon those who have no sense.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

No soul can believe, except by the will of Allah, and He will place doubt (or obscurity) on those who will not understand.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( وما كان لنفس أن تؤمن إلا بإذن الله ويجعل الرجس ) وهو الخبال والضلال ، ( على الذين لا يعقلون ) أي : حجج الله وأدلته ، وهو العادل في كل ذلك ، في هداية من هدى ، وإضلال من ضل .
