Quran 10:15

Surah Yunus, Verse 15

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَاتُنَا بَيِّنَٰتٍ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَرْجُونَ لِقَآءَنَا ٱئْتِ بِقُرْءَانٍ غَيْرِ هَٰذَآ أَوْ بَدِّلْهُ قُلْ مَا يَكُونُ لِىٓ أَنْ أُبَدِّلَهُۥ مِن تِلْقَآئِ نَفْسِىٓ إِنْ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ إِنْ عَصَيْتُ رَبِّى عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Word by word

وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when تُتْلَىٰ tut'lā are recited عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim to them ءَايَاتُنَا āyātunā Our Verses بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ ۙ bayyinātin (as) clear proofs قَالَ qāla said ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who لَا lā (do) not يَرْجُونَ yarjūna hope لِقَآءَنَا liqāanā (for the) meeting (with) Us ٱئْتِ i'ti Bring us بِقُرْءَانٍ biqur'ānin a Quran غَيْرِ ghayri other (than) هَـٰذَآ hādhā this أَوْ aw or بَدِّلْهُ ۚ baddil'hu change it قُلْ qul Say مَا mā Not يَكُونُ yakūnu (it) is لِىٓ lī for me أَنْ an that أُبَدِّلَهُۥ ubaddilahu I change it مِن min of تِلْقَآئِ til'qāi my own accord نَفْسِىٓ ۖ nafsī my own accord إِنْ in Not أَتَّبِعُ attabiʿu I follow إِلَّا illā except مَا mā what يُوحَىٰٓ yūḥā is revealed إِلَىَّ ۖ ilayya to me إِنِّىٓ innī Indeed, I أَخَافُ akhāfu [I] fear إِنْ in if عَصَيْتُ ʿaṣaytu I were to disobey رَبِّى rabbī my Lord عَذَابَ ʿadhāba (the) punishment يَوْمٍ yawmin (of) a Day عَظِيمٍۢ ʿaẓīmin Great

Transliteration

Wa-itha tutla AAalayhim ayatunabayyinatin qala allatheena layarjoona liqaana i/ti biqur-anin ghayri hathaaw baddilhu qul ma yakoonu lee an obaddilahu min tilqa-inafsee in attabiAAu illa ma yooha ilayyainnee akhafu in AAasaytu rabbee AAathabayawmin AAatheem

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And when Our clear revelations are recited unto them, they who look not for the meeting with Us say: Bring a Lecture other than this, or change it. Say (O Muhammad): It is not for me to change it of my accord. I only follow that which is inspired in me. Lo! if I disobey my Lord I fear the retribution of an awful Day.

But when Our Clear Signs are rehearsed unto them, those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, Say: "Bring us a reading other than this, or change this," Say: "It is not for me, of my own accord, to change it: I follow naught but what is revealed unto me: if I were to disobey my Lord, I should myself fear the penalty of a Great Day (to come)."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى عن تعنت الكفار من مشركي قريش الجاحدين الحق المعرضين عنه ، أنهم إذا قرأ عليهم الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم كتاب الله وحججه الواضحة قالوا له : ( ائت بقرآن غير هذا ) أي : رد هذا وجئنا بغيره من نمط آخر ، أو بدله إلى وضع آخر ، قال الله لنبيه ، صلوات الله وسلامه عليه ، ( قل ما يكون لي أن أبدله من تلقاء نفسي ) أي : ليس هذا إلي ، إنما أنا عبد مأمور ، ورسول مبلغ عن الله ، ( إن أتبع إلا ما يوحى إلي إني أخاف إن عصيت ربي عذاب يوم عظيم )
