وَٱلَّذِينَ كَسَبُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ جَزَآءُ سَيِّئَةٍۭ بِمِثْلِهَا وَتَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ مَّا لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ كَأَنَّمَآ أُغْشِيَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ قِطَعًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مُظْلِمًا أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

Word by word

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who كَسَبُوا۟ kasabū earned ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ l-sayiāti the evil deeds جَزَآءُ jazāu (the) recompense سَيِّئَةٍۭ sayyi-atin (of) an evil deed بِمِثْلِهَا bimith'lihā (is) like it وَتَرْهَقُهُمْ watarhaquhum and (will) cover them ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ dhillatun humiliation مَّا mā They will not have لَهُم lahum They will not have مِّنَ mina from ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah مِنْ min any عَاصِمٍۢ ۖ ʿāṣimin defender كَأَنَّمَآ ka-annamā As if أُغْشِيَتْ ugh'shiyat had been covered وُجُوهُهُمْ wujūhuhum their faces قِطَعًۭا qiṭaʿan (with) pieces مِّنَ mina from ٱلَّيْلِ al-layli the darkness (of) night مُظْلِمًا ۚ muẓ'liman the darkness (of) night أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those أَصْحَـٰبُ aṣḥābu (are the) companions ٱلنَّارِ ۖ l-nāri (of) the Fire هُمْ hum they فِيهَا fīhā in it خَـٰلِدُونَ khālidūna (will) abide forever

Transliteration

Wallatheena kasaboo assayyi-atijazao sayyi-atin bimithliha watarhaquhum thillatunma lahum mina Allahi min AAasimin kaannamaoghshiyat wujoohuhum qitaAAan mina allayli muthlimanola-ika as-habu annari humfeeha khalidoon

Translations

And those who earn ill-deeds, (for them) requital of each ill-deed by the like thereof; and ignominy overtaketh them - They have no protector from Allah - as if their faces had been covered with a cloak of darkest night. Such are rightful owners of the Fire; they will abide therein.

But those who have earned evil will have a reward of like evil: ignominy will cover their (faces): No defender will they have from (the wrath of) Allah: Their faces will be covered, as it were, with pieces from the depth of the darkness of night: they are companions of the Fire: they will abide therein (for aye)!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

لما أخبر تعالى عن حال السعداء الذين يضاعف لهم الحسنات ، ويزدادون على ذلك ، عطف بذكر حال الأشقياء ، فذكر عدله تعالى فيهم ، وأنه يجازيهم على السيئة بمثلها ، لا يزيدهم على ذلك ، ( وترهقهم ) أي : تعتريهم وتعلوهم ذلة من معاصيهم وخوفهم منها ، كما قال تعالى : ( وتراهم يعرضون عليها خاشعين من الذل ينظرون من طرف خفي ) [ الشورى : 45 ] ، وقال تعالى : ( ولا تحسبن الله غافلا عما يعمل الظالمون إنما يؤخرهم ليوم تشخص فيه الأبصار مهطعين مقنعي رءوسهم لا يرتد إليهم طرفهم وأفئدتهم هواء وأنذر الناس يوم يأتيهم العذاب ) [ إبراهيم : 42 - 44 ] ، وقوله ( ما لهم من الله من عاصم ) أي : من مانع ولا واق يقيهم العذاب ، كما قال تعالى : ( يقول الإنسان يومئذ أين المفر كلا لا وزر إلى ربك يومئذ المستقر ) [ القيامة : 10 - 12 ] .

وقوله : ( كأنما أغشيت وجوههم قطعا من الليل مظلما ) إخبار عن سواد وجوههم في الدار الآخرة ، كما قال تعالى : ( يوم تبيض وجوه وتسود وجوه فأما الذين اسودت وجوههم أكفرتم بعد إيمانكم فذوقوا العذاب بما كنتم تكفرون وأما الذين ابيضت وجوههم ففي رحمة الله هم فيها خالدون ) [ آل عمران : 106 ، 107 ] ، وكما قال تعالى : ( وجوه يومئذ مسفرة ضاحكة مستبشرة ووجوه يومئذ عليها غبرة ترهقها قترة أولئك هم الكفرة الفجرة ) [ عبس : 38 - 42 ] . الآية .
