Quran 10:36

Surah Yunus, Verse 36

وَمَا يَتَّبِعُ أَكْثَرُهُمْ إِلَّا ظَنًّا إِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not يَتَّبِعُ yattabiʿu follow أَكْثَرُهُمْ aktharuhum most of them إِلَّا illā except ظَنًّا ۚ ẓannan assumption إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلظَّنَّ l-ẓana the assumption لَا lā (does) not يُغْنِى yugh'nī avail مِنَ mina against ٱلْحَقِّ l-ḥaqi the truth شَيْـًٔا ۚ shayan anything إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah عَلِيمٌۢ ʿalīmun (is) All-Knower بِمَا bimā of what يَفْعَلُونَ yafʿalūna they do

Transliteration

Wama yattabiAAu aktharuhum illathannan inna aththanna layughnee mina alhaqqi shay-an inna Allaha AAaleemunbima yafAAaloon

Translations

Most of them follow not but conjecture. Assuredly conjecture can by no means take the place of truth. Lo! Allah is Aware of what they do.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

But most of them follow nothing but fancy: truly fancy can be of no avail against truth. Verily Allah is well aware of all that they do.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم بين تعالى أنهم لا يتبعون في دينهم هذا دليلا ولا برهانا ، وإنما هو ظن منهم ، أي : توهم وتخيل ، وذلك لا يغني عنهم شيئا ، ( إن الله عليم بما يفعلون ) تهديد لهم ، ووعيد شديد ؛ لأنه تعالى أخبر أنه سيجازيهم على ذلك أتم الجزاء .
