Quran 12:107

Surah Yusuf, Verse 107

أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ غَٰشِيَةٌ مِّنْ عَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Word by word

أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟ afa-aminū Do they then feel secure أَن an (against) that تَأْتِيَهُمْ tatiyahum comes to them غَـٰشِيَةٌۭ ghāshiyatun an overwhelming مِّنْ min [of] عَذَابِ ʿadhābi punishment ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah أَوْ aw or تَأْتِيَهُمُ tatiyahumu comes to them ٱلسَّاعَةُ l-sāʿatu the Hour بَغْتَةًۭ baghtatan suddenly وَهُمْ wahum while they لَا lā (do) not يَشْعُرُونَ yashʿurūna perceive

Transliteration

Afaaminoo an ta/tiyahum ghashiyatunmin AAathabi Allahi aw ta/tiyahumu assaAAatubaghtatan wahum la yashAAuroon

Translations

Deem they themselves secure from the coming on them of a pall of Allah's punishment, or the coming of the Hour suddenly while they are unaware?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Do they then feel secure from the coming against them of the covering veil of the wrath of Allah,- or of the coming against them of the (final) Hour all of a sudden while they perceive not?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( أفأمنوا أن تأتيهم غاشية من عذاب الله أو تأتيهم الساعة بغتة وهم لا يشعرون ) أي : أفأمن هؤلاء المشركون [ بالله ] أن يأتيهم أمر يغشاهم من حيث لا يشعرون ، كما قال تعالى : ( أفأمن الذين مكروا السيئات أن يخسف الله بهم الأرض أو يأتيهم العذاب من حيث لا يشعرون أو يأخذهم في تقلبهم فما هم بمعجزين أو يأخذهم على تخوف فإن ربكم لرءوف رحيم ) [ النحل : 45 - 47 ] وقال تعالى : ( أفأمن أهل القرى أن يأتيهم بأسنا بياتا وهم نائمون أوأمن أهل القرى أن يأتيهم بأسنا ضحى وهم يلعبون أفأمنوا مكر الله فلا يأمن مكر الله إلا القوم الخاسرون ) [ الأعراف : 97 - 99 ] .
