Quran 12:78

Surah Yusuf, Verse 78

قَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ إِنَّ لَهُۥٓ أَبًا شَيْخًا كَبِيرًا فَخُذْ أَحَدَنَا مَكَانَهُۥٓ إِنَّا نَرَىٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

Word by word

قَالُوا۟ qālū They said يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا yāayyuhā O ٱلْعَزِيزُ l-ʿazīzu Aziz إِنَّ inna Indeed لَهُۥٓ lahu he has أَبًۭا aban a father شَيْخًۭا shaykhan old كَبِيرًۭا kabīran [great] فَخُذْ fakhudh so take أَحَدَنَا aḥadanā one of us مَكَانَهُۥٓ ۖ makānahu (in) his place إِنَّا innā Indeed, we نَرَىٰكَ narāka [we] see you مِنَ mina of ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ l-muḥ'sinīna the good-doers

Transliteration

Qaloo ya ayyuhaalAAazeezu inna lahu aban shaykhan kabeeran fakhuth ahadanamakanahu inna naraka mina almuhsineen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They said: O ruler of the land! Lo! he hath a very aged father, so take one of us instead of him. Lo! we behold thee of those who do kindness.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They said: "O exalted one! Behold! he has a father, aged and venerable, (who will grieve for him); so take one of us in his place; for we see that thou art (gracious) in doing good."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

لما تعين أخذ بنيامين وتقرر تركه عند يوسف بمقتضى اعترافهم ، شرعوا يترققون له ويعطفونه عليهم ، ف ( قالوا يا أيها العزيز إن له أبا شيخا كبيرا ) يعنون : وهو يحبه حبا شديدا ويتسلى به عن ولده الذي فقده ، ( فخذ أحدنا مكانه ) أي : بدله ، يكون عندك عوضا عنه ، ( إنا نراك من المحسنين ) أي : من العادلين المنصفين القابلين للخير .
