Quran 13:3

Surah Ar-Ra'd, Verse 3

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى مَدَّ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنْهَٰرًا وَمِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ جَعَلَ فِيهَا زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ يُغْشِى ٱلَّيْلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

Word by word

وَهُوَ wahuwa And He ٱلَّذِى alladhī (is) the One Who مَدَّ madda spread ٱلْأَرْضَ l-arḍa the earth وَجَعَلَ wajaʿala and placed فِيهَا fīhā in it رَوَٰسِىَ rawāsiya firm mountains وَأَنْهَـٰرًۭا ۖ wa-anhāran and rivers وَمِن wamin and from كُلِّ kulli all ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ l-thamarāti (of) the fruits جَعَلَ jaʿala He made فِيهَا fīhā in it زَوْجَيْنِ zawjayni pairs ٱثْنَيْنِ ۖ ith'nayni two يُغْشِى yugh'shī He covers ٱلَّيْلَ al-layla the night ٱلنَّهَارَ ۚ l-nahāra (with) the day إِنَّ inna Indeed فِى fī in ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ laāyātin surely (are) Signs لِّقَوْمٍۢ liqawmin for a people يَتَفَكَّرُونَ yatafakkarūna who ponder

Transliteration

Wahuwa allathee madda al-ardawajaAAala feeha rawasiya waanharan waminkulli aththamarati jaAAala feeha zawjayniithnayni yughshee allayla annahara inna fee thalikalaayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroon

Translations

And He it is Who spread out the earth and placed therein firm hills and flowing streams, and of all fruits He placed therein two spouses (male and female). He covereth the night with the day. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who take thought.

And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o'er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

لما ذكر تعالى العالم العلوي ، شرع في ذكر قدرته وحكمته وإحكامه للعالم السفلي ، فقال : ( وهو الذي مد الأرض ) أي : جعلها متسعة ممتدة في الطول والعرض ، وأرساها بجبال راسيات شامخات ، وأجرى فيها الأنهار والجداول والعيون لسقي ما جعل فيها من الثمرات المختلفة الألوان والأشكال والطعوم والروائح ، من كل زوجين اثنين ، أي : من كل شكل صنفان .

( يغشي الليل النهار ) أي : جعل كلا منهما يطلب الآخر طلبا حثيثا ، فإذا ذهب هذا غشيه هذا ، وإذا انقضى هذا جاء الآخر ، فيتصرف أيضا في الزمان كما تصرف في المكان والسكان .

( إن في ذلك لآيات لقوم يتفكرون ) أي : في آلاء الله وحكمته ودلائله .
