Quran 18:12

Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 12

ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَٰهُمْ لِنَعْلَمَ أَىُّ ٱلْحِزْبَيْنِ أَحْصَىٰ لِمَا لَبِثُوٓا۟ أَمَدًا

Word by word

ثُمَّ thumma Then بَعَثْنَـٰهُمْ baʿathnāhum We raised them up لِنَعْلَمَ linaʿlama that We make evident أَىُّ ayyu which ٱلْحِزْبَيْنِ l-ḥiz'bayni (of) the two parties أَحْصَىٰ aḥṣā best calculated لِمَا limā for what لَبِثُوٓا۟ labithū (they had) remained أَمَدًۭا amadan (in) time

Transliteration

Thumma baAAathnahum linaAAlama ayyualhizbayni ahsa lima labithoo amada

Translations

And afterward We raised them up that We might know which of the two parties would best calculate the time that they had tarried.

Then We roused them, in order to test which of the two parties was best at calculating the term of years they had tarried!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

(ثم بعثناهم ) أي : من رقدتهم تلك ، وخرج أحدهم بدراهم معه ليشتري لهم بها طعاما يأكلونه ، كما سيأتي بيانه وتفصيله ؛ ولهذا قال : ( ثم بعثناهم لنعلم أي الحزبين ) أي المختلفين فيهم ( أحصى لما لبثوا أمدا ) قيل : عددا وقيل : غاية فإن الأمد الغاية كقوله

سبق الجواد إذا استولى على الأمد .
