Quran 18:56

Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 56

وَمَا نُرْسِلُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ وَيُجَٰدِلُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا۟ بِهِ ٱلْحَقَّ وَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ ءَايَٰتِى وَمَآ أُنذِرُوا۟ هُزُوًا

Word by word

وَمَا wamā And not نُرْسِلُ nur'silu We send ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ l-mur'salīna the Messengers إِلَّا illā except مُبَشِّرِينَ mubashirīna (as) bearers of glad tidings وَمُنذِرِينَ ۚ wamundhirīna and (as) warners وَيُجَـٰدِلُ wayujādilu And dispute ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieve بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ bil-bāṭili with falsehood لِيُدْحِضُوا۟ liyud'ḥiḍū to refute بِهِ bihi thereby ٱلْحَقَّ ۖ l-ḥaqa the truth وَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ wa-ittakhadhū And they take ءَايَـٰتِى āyātī My Verses وَمَآ wamā and what أُنذِرُوا۟ undhirū they are warned هُزُوًۭا huzuwan (in) ridicule

Transliteration

Wama nursilu almursaleena illamubashshireena wamunthireena wayujadilu allatheenakafaroo bilbatili liyudhidoo bihi alhaqqawattakhathoo ayatee wama onthiroohuzuwa

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

We send not the messengers save as bearers of good news and warners. Those who disbelieve contend with falsehood in order to refute the Truth thereby. And they take Our revelations and that wherewith they are threatened as a jest.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

We only send the messengers to give Glad Tidings and to give warnings: But the unbelievers dispute with vain argument, in order therewith to weaken the truth, and they treat My Signs as a jest, as also the fact that they are warned!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال : ( وما نرسل المرسلين إلا مبشرين ومنذرين ويجادل الذين كفروا بالباطل ليدحضوا به الحق واتخذوا آياتي وما أنذروا هزوا ) أي : قبل العذاب مبشرين من صدقهم وآمن بهم ، ومنذرين من كذبهم وخالفهم .

ثم أخبر عن الكفار بأنهم يجادلون بالباطل ) ليدحضوا به ) أي : ليضعفوا به ) الحق ) الذي جاءتهم به الرسل ، وليس ذلك بحاصل لهم . ( واتخذوا آياتي وما أنذروا هزوا ) أي : اتخذوا الحجج والبراهين وخوارق العادات التي بعث بها الرسل وما أنذروهم وخوفوهم به من العذاب ) هزوا ) أي : سخروا منهم في ذلك ، وهو أشد التكذيب .
