Quran 2:167

Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 167

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوا۟ لَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَتَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُمْ كَمَا تَبَرَّءُوا۟ مِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ يُرِيهِمُ ٱللَّهُ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ حَسَرَٰتٍ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَا هُم بِخَٰرِجِينَ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ

Word by word

وَقَالَ waqāla And said ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who ٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ittabaʿū followed لَوْ law (Only) if أَنَّ anna [that] لَنَا lanā for us كَرَّةًۭ karratan a return فَنَتَبَرَّأَ fanatabarra-a then we will disown مِنْهُمْ min'hum [from] them كَمَا kamā as تَبَرَّءُوا۟ tabarraū they disown مِنَّا ۗ minnā [from] us كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Thus يُرِيهِمُ yurīhimu will show them ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ aʿmālahum their deeds حَسَرَٰتٍ ḥasarātin (as) regrets عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ ʿalayhim for them وَمَا wamā And not هُم hum they بِخَـٰرِجِينَ bikhārijīna will come out مِنَ mina from ٱلنَّارِ l-nāri the Fire

Transliteration

Waqala allatheena ittabaAAoolaw anna lana karratan fanatabarraa minhum kamatabarraoo minna kathalika yureehimu AllahuaAAmalahum hasaratin AAalayhim wamahum bikharijeena mina annar

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And those who were but followers will say: If a return were possible for us, we would disown them even as they have disowned us. Thus will Allah show them their own deeds as anguish for them, and they will not emerge from the Fire.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

And those who followed would say: "If only We had one more chance, We would clear ourselves of them, as they have cleared themselves of us." Thus will Allah show them (The fruits of) their deeds as (nothing but) regrets. Nor will there be a way for them out of the Fire.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( وقال الذين اتبعوا لو أن لنا كرة فنتبرأ منهم كما تبرءوا منا ) أي : لو أن لنا عودة إلى الدار الدنيا حتى نتبرأ من هؤلاء ومن عبادتهم ، فلا نلتفت إليهم ، بل نوحد الله وحده بالعبادة . وهم كاذبون في هذا ، بل لو ردوا لعادوا لما نهوا عنه . كما أخبر الله تعالى عنهم بذلك ; ولهذا قال : ( كذلك يريهم الله أعمالهم حسرات عليهم وما هم بخارجين من النار ) أي : تذهب وتضمحل كما قال الله تعالى : ( وقدمنا إلى ما عملوا من عمل فجعلناه هباء منثورا ) [ الفرقان : 23 ] .

وقال تعالى : ( مثل الذين كفروا بربهم أعمالهم كرماد اشتدت به الريح في يوم عاصف ) الآية [ إبراهيم : 18 ] ، وقال تعالى : ( والذين كفروا أعمالهم كسراب بقيعة يحسبه الظمآن ماء ) الآية [ النور : 39 ] ، ولهذا قال تعالى : ( وما هم بخارجين من النار ) .
