Quran 2:86

Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 86

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ فَلَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ

Word by word

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (are) the ones who ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ ish'tarawū bought ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ l-ḥayata the life ٱلدُّنْيَا l-dun'yā (of) the world بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ bil-ākhirati for the Hereafter فَلَا falā so not يُخَفَّفُ yukhaffafu will be lightened عَنْهُمُ ʿanhumu for them ٱلْعَذَابُ l-ʿadhābu the punishment وَلَا walā and not هُمْ hum they يُنصَرُونَ yunṣarūna will be helped

Transliteration

Ola-ika allatheena ishtarawooalhayata addunya bil-akhiratifala yukhaffafu AAanhumu alAAathabu wala humyunsaroon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Such are those who buy the life of the world at the price of the Hereafter. Their punishment will not be lightened, neither will they have support.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

These are the people who buy the life of this world at the price of the Hereafter: their penalty shall not be lightened nor shall they be helped.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

"أولئك الذين اشتروا الحياة الدنيا بالآخرة" أي : استحبوها على الآخرة واختاروها ( فلا يخفف عنهم العذاب ) أي : لا يفتر عنهم ساعة واحدة ( ولا هم ينصرون )

أي : وليس لهم ناصر ينقذهم مما هم فيه من العذاب الدائم السرمدي ، ولا يجيرهم منه .
