Quran 24:13

Surah An-Noor, Verse 13

لَّوْلَا جَآءُو عَلَيْهِ بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَآءَ فَإِذْ لَمْ يَأْتُوا۟ بِٱلشُّهَدَآءِ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلْكَٰذِبُونَ

Word by word

لَّوْلَا lawlā Why (did) not جَآءُو jāū they bring عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi for it بِأَرْبَعَةِ bi-arbaʿati four شُهَدَآءَ ۚ shuhadāa witnesses فَإِذْ fa-idh Then when لَمْ lam not يَأْتُوا۟ yatū they brought بِٱلشُّهَدَآءِ bil-shuhadāi the witnesses فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ fa-ulāika then those عِندَ ʿinda near Allah ٱللَّهِ l-lahi near Allah هُمُ humu they ٱلْكَـٰذِبُونَ l-kādhibūna (are) the liars

Transliteration

Lawla jaoo AAalayhibi-arbaAAati shuhadaa fa-ith lam ya/too bishshuhada-ifaola-ika AAinda Allahi humu alkathiboon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Why did they not produce four witnesses? Since they produce not witnesses, they verily are liars in the sight of Allah.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Why did they not bring four witnesses to prove it? When they have not brought the witnesses, such men, in the sight of Allah, (stand forth) themselves as liars!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قال الله تعالى : ( لولا ) أي : هلا ( جاءوا عليه ) أي : على ما قالوه ( بأربعة شهداء ) يشهدون على صحة ما جاءوا به ( فإذ لم يأتوا بالشهداء فأولئك عند الله هم الكاذبون ) أي : في حكم الله كذبة فاجرون .
