Quran 29:55

Surah Al-Ankaboot, Verse 55

يَوْمَ يَغْشَىٰهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِن تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِهِمْ وَيَقُولُ ذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

Word by word

يَوْمَ yawma On (the) Day يَغْشَىٰهُمُ yaghshāhumu will cover them ٱلْعَذَابُ l-ʿadhābu the punishment مِن min from فَوْقِهِمْ fawqihim above them وَمِن wamin and from تَحْتِ taḥti below أَرْجُلِهِمْ arjulihim their feet وَيَقُولُ wayaqūlu and He will say ذُوقُوا۟ dhūqū Taste مَا mā what كُنتُمْ kuntum you used تَعْمَلُونَ taʿmalūna (to) do

Transliteration

Yawma yaghshahumu alAAathabumin fawqihim wamin tahti arjulihim wayaqoolu thooqooma kuntum taAAmaloon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

On the day when the doom will overwhelm them from above them and from underneath their feet, and He will say: Taste what ye used to do!

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

On the Day that the Punishment shall cover them from above them and from below them, and (a Voice) shall say: "Taste ye (the fruits) of your deeds!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال تعالى : ( يوم يغشاهم العذاب من فوقهم ومن تحت أرجلهم ) ، كقوله تعالى : ( لهم من جهنم مهاد ومن فوقهم غواش ) [ الأعراف : 41 ] ، وقال : ( لهم من فوقهم ظلل من النار ومن تحتهم ظلل ) [ الزمر : 16 ] ، وقال : ( لو يعلم الذين كفروا حين لا يكفون عن وجوههم النار ولا عن ظهورهم ) [ الأنبياء : 39 ] ، فالنار تغشاهم من سائر جهاتهم ، وهذا أبلغ في العذاب الحسي .

وقوله : ( ويقول ذوقوا ما كنتم تعملون ) ، تهديد وتقريع وتوبيخ ، وهذا عذاب معنوي على النفوس ، كقوله : ( يوم يسحبون في النار على وجوههم ذوقوا مس سقر . إنا كل شيء خلقناه بقدر ) [ القمر : 48 ، 49 ] ، وقال ( يوم يدعون إلى نار جهنم دعا . هذه النار التي كنتم بها تكذبون . أفسحر هذا أم أنتم لا تبصرون . اصلوها فاصبروا أو لا تصبروا سواء عليكم إنما تجزون ما كنتم تعملون ) [ الطور : 13 - 16 ] .
