Quran 31:17

Surah Luqman, Verse 17

يَٰبُنَىَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱنْهَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَصَابَكَ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ ٱلْأُمُورِ

Word by word

يَـٰبُنَىَّ yābunayya O my son أَقِمِ aqimi Establish ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ l-ṣalata the prayer وَأْمُرْ wamur and enjoin بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ bil-maʿrūfi [with] the right وَٱنْهَ wa-in'ha and forbid عَنِ ʿani from ٱلْمُنكَرِ l-munkari the wrong وَٱصْبِرْ wa-iṣ'bir and be patient عَلَىٰ ʿalā over مَآ mā what أَصَابَكَ ۖ aṣābaka befalls you إِنَّ inna Indeed ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that مِنْ min (is) of عَزْمِ ʿazmi the matters requiring determination ٱلْأُمُورِ l-umūri the matters requiring determination

Transliteration

Ya bunayya aqimi assalatawa/mur bilmaAAroofi wanha AAani almunkari wasbirAAala ma asabaka inna thalika minAAazmi al-omoor

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

O my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! that is of the steadfast heart of things.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

"O my son! establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid what is wrong: and bear with patient constancy whatever betide thee; for this is firmness (of purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

م قال : ( يا بني أقم الصلاة ) أي : بحدودها وفروضها وأوقاتها ، ( وأمر بالمعروف وانه عن المنكر ) أي : بحسب طاقتك وجهدك ، ( واصبر على ما أصابك ) ، علم أن الآمر بالمعروف والناهي عن المنكر ، لا بد أن يناله من الناس أذى ، فأمره بالصبر .

وقوله : ( إن ذلك من عزم الأمور ) أي : إن الصبر على أذى الناس لمن عزم الأمور .
