Quran 4:89

Surah An-Nisaa, Verse 89

وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تَكْفُرُونَ كَمَا كَفَرُوا۟ فَتَكُونُونَ سَوَآءً فَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ حَتَّىٰ يُهَاجِرُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ وَلِيًّا وَلَا نَصِيرًا

Word by word

وَدُّوا۟ waddū They wish لَوْ law if تَكْفُرُونَ takfurūna you disbelieve كَمَا kamā as كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū they disbelieved فَتَكُونُونَ fatakūnūna and you would be سَوَآءًۭ ۖ sawāan alike فَلَا falā So (do) not تَتَّخِذُوا۟ tattakhidhū take مِنْهُمْ min'hum from them أَوْلِيَآءَ awliyāa allies حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until يُهَاجِرُوا۟ yuhājirū they emigrate فِى fī in سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way ٱللَّهِ ۚ l-lahi (of) Allah فَإِن fa-in But if تَوَلَّوْا۟ tawallaw they turn back فَخُذُوهُمْ fakhudhūhum seize them وَٱقْتُلُوهُمْ wa-uq'tulūhum and kill them حَيْثُ ḥaythu wherever وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ ۖ wajadttumūhum you find them وَلَا walā And (do) not تَتَّخِذُوا۟ tattakhidhū take مِنْهُمْ min'hum from them وَلِيًّۭا waliyyan any ally وَلَا walā and not نَصِيرًا naṣīran any helper

Transliteration

Waddoo law takfuroona kama kafaroofatakoonoona sawaan fala tattakhithoo minhumawliyaa hatta yuhajiroo fee sabeeliAllahi fa-in tawallaw fakhuthoohum waqtuloohumhaythu wajadtumoohum wala tattakhithoominhum waliyyan wala naseera

Translations

They long that ye should disbelieve even as they disbelieve, that ye may be upon a level (with them). So choose not friends from them till they forsake their homes in the way of Allah; if they turn back (to enmity) then take them and kill them wherever ye find them, and choose no friend nor helper from among them,

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks;-

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال : ( ودوا لو تكفرون كما كفروا فتكونون سواء ) أي : هم يودون لكم الضلالة لتستووا أنتم وإياهم فيها ، وما ذاك إلا لشدة عداوتهم وبغضهم لكم ; ولهذا قال : ( فلا تتخذوا منهم أولياء حتى يهاجروا في سبيل الله فإن تولوا ) أي : تركوا الهجرة ، قاله العوفي عن ابن عباس . وقال السدي : أظهروا كفرهم ( فخذوهم واقتلوهم حيث وجدتموهم ولا تتخذوا منهم وليا ولا نصيرا ) أي : لا توالوهم ولا تستنصروا بهم على الأعداء ما داموا كذلك .
