Quran 40:21

Surah Al-Ghaafir, Verse 21

أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَءَاثَارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقٍ

Word by word

۞ أَوَلَمْ awalam Do not يَسِيرُوا۟ yasīrū they travel فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth فَيَنظُرُوا۟ fayanẓurū and see كَيْفَ kayfa how كَانَ kāna was عَـٰقِبَةُ ʿāqibatu (the) end ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who كَانُوا۟ kānū were مِن min before them قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ qablihim before them كَانُوا۟ kānū They were هُمْ hum [they] أَشَدَّ ashadda superior مِنْهُمْ min'hum to them قُوَّةًۭ quwwatan (in) strength وَءَاثَارًۭا waāthāran and (in) impressions فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the land فَأَخَذَهُمُ fa-akhadhahumu but Allah seized them ٱللَّهُ l-lahu but Allah seized them بِذُنُوبِهِمْ bidhunūbihim for their sins وَمَا wamā and not كَانَ kāna was لَهُم lahum for them مِّنَ mina against ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah مِن min any وَاقٍۢ wāqin protector

Transliteration

Awa lam yaseeroo fee al-ardi fayanthurookayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena kanoomin qablihim kanoo hum ashadda minhum quwwatan waatharanfee al-ardi faakhathahumu Allahu bithunoobihimwama kana lahum mina Allahi min waq

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Have they not travelled in the land to see the nature of the consequence for those who disbelieved before them? They were mightier than these in power and (in the) traces (which they left behind them) in the earth. Yet Allah seized them for their sins, and they had no protector from Allah.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the End of those before them? They were even superior to them in strength, and in the traces (they have left) in the land: but Allah did call them to account for their sins, and none had they to defend them against Allah.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى : أولم يسر هؤلاء المكذبون برسالتك يا محمد ( في الأرض فينظروا كيف كان عاقبة الذين كانوا من قبلهم ) أي : من الأمم المكذبة بالأنبياء ، ما حل بهم من العذاب والنكال مع أنهم كانوا أشد من هؤلاء قوة ( وآثارا في الأرض ) أي : أثروا في الأرض من البنايات والمعالم والديارات ، ما لا يقدر عليه هؤلاء ، كما قال : ( ولقد مكناهم فيما إن مكناكم فيه ) [ الأحقاف : 26 ] ، وقال ( وأثاروا الأرض وعمروها أكثر مما عمروها ) [ الروم : 9 ] أي : ومع هذه القوة العظيمة والبأس الشديد ، أخذهم الله بذنوبهم ، وهي كفرهم برسلهم ، ( وما كان لهم من الله من واق ) أي : وما دفع عنهم عذاب الله أحد ، ولا رده عنهم راد ، ولا وقاهم واق .
