Quran 47:22

Surah Muhammad, Verse 22

فَهَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ أَن تُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوٓا۟ أَرْحَامَكُمْ

Word by word

فَهَلْ fahal Then would عَسَيْتُمْ ʿasaytum you perhaps إِن in if تَوَلَّيْتُمْ tawallaytum you are given authority أَن an that تُفْسِدُوا۟ tuf'sidū you cause corruption فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth وَتُقَطِّعُوٓا۟ watuqaṭṭiʿū and cut off أَرْحَامَكُمْ arḥāmakum your ties of kinship

Transliteration

Fahal AAasaytum in tawallaytum an tufsidoofee al-ardi watuqattiAAoo arhamakum

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Would ye then, if ye were given the command, work corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Then, is it to be expected of you, if ye were put in authority, that ye will do mischief in the land, and break your ties of kith and kin?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( فهل عسيتم إن توليتم ) أي : عن الجهاد ونكلتم عنه ، ( أن تفسدوا في الأرض وتقطعوا أرحامكم ) أي : تعودوا إلى ما كنتم فيه من الجاهلية الجهلاء ، تسفكون الدماء وتقطعون الأرحام
