Quran 5:108

Surah Al-Maaida, Verse 108

ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يَأْتُوا۟ بِٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهَآ أَوْ يَخَافُوٓا۟ أَن تُرَدَّ أَيْمَٰنٌۢ بَعْدَ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَٰسِقِينَ

Word by word

ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That أَدْنَىٰٓ adnā (is) closer أَن an that يَأْتُوا۟ yatū they will give بِٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ bil-shahādati the testimony عَلَىٰ ʿalā in وَجْهِهَآ wajhihā its (true) form أَوْ aw or يَخَافُوٓا۟ yakhāfū they would fear أَن an that تُرَدَّ turadda will be refuted أَيْمَـٰنٌۢ aymānun their oaths بَعْدَ baʿda after أَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ ۗ aymānihim their (others) oaths وَٱتَّقُوا۟ wa-ittaqū And fear ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ ۗ wa-is'maʿū and listen وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu and Allah لَا lā (does) not يَهْدِى yahdī guide ٱلْقَوْمَ l-qawma the people ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ l-fāsiqīna the defiantly disobedient

Transliteration

Thalika adna an ya/too bishshahadatiAAala wajhiha aw yakhafoo an turadda aymanunbaAAda aymanihim wattaqoo Allaha wasmaAAoowallahu la yahdee alqawma alfasiqeen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Thus it is more likely that they will bear true witness or fear that after their oaths the oaths (of others) will be taken. So be mindful of your duty (to Allah) and hearken. Allah guideth not the froward folk.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

That is most suitable: that they may give the evidence in its true nature and shape, or else they would fear that other oaths would be taken after their oaths. But fear Allah, and listen (to His counsel): for Allah guideth not a rebellious people:

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( ذلك أدنى أن يأتوا بالشهادة على وجهها ) أي : شرعية هذا الحكم على هذا الوجه المرضي من تحليف الشاهدين الذميين وقد استريب بهما ، أقرب إلى إقامتهما الشهادة على الوجه المرضي .

وقوله : ( أو يخافوا أن ترد أيمان بعد أيمانهم ) أي : يكون الحامل لهم على الإتيان بالشهادة على وجهها ، هو تعظيم الحلف بالله ومراعاة جانبه وإجلاله ، والخوف من الفضيحة بين الناس إذا ردت اليمين على الورثة ، فيحلفون ويستحقون ما يدعون ، ولهذا قال : ( أو يخافوا أن ترد أيمان بعد أيمانهم )

ثم قال : ( واتقوا الله ) أي : في جميع أموركم ) واسمعوا ) أي : وأطيعوا ( والله لا يهدي القوم الفاسقين ) يعني : الخارجين عن طاعته ومتابعة شريعته .
