Quran 5:23

Surah Al-Maaida, Verse 23

قَالَ رَجُلَانِ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمَا ٱدْخُلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْبَابَ فَإِذَا دَخَلْتُمُوهُ فَإِنَّكُمْ غَٰلِبُونَ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَتَوَكَّلُوٓا۟ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Word by word

قَالَ qāla Said رَجُلَانِ rajulāni two men مِنَ mina from ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who يَخَافُونَ yakhāfūna feared (Allah) أَنْعَمَ anʿama (had) favored ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah عَلَيْهِمَا ʿalayhimā [on] both of them ٱدْخُلُوا۟ ud'khulū Enter عَلَيْهِمُ ʿalayhimu upon them ٱلْبَابَ l-bāba (through) the gate فَإِذَا fa-idhā then when دَخَلْتُمُوهُ dakhaltumūhu you have entered it فَإِنَّكُمْ fa-innakum then indeed, you (will be) غَـٰلِبُونَ ۚ ghālibūna victorious وَعَلَى waʿalā And upon ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah فَتَوَكَّلُوٓا۟ fatawakkalū then put your trust إِن in if كُنتُم kuntum you are مُّؤْمِنِينَ mu'minīna believers

Transliteration

Qala rajulani mina allatheenayakhafoona anAAama Allahu AAalayhimaodkhuloo AAalayhimu albaba fa-itha dakhaltumoohufa-innakum ghaliboona waAAala Allahifatawakkaloo in kuntum mu/mineen

Then out spake two of those who feared (their Lord, men) unto whom Allah had been gracious: Enter in upon them by the gate, for if ye enter by it, lo! ye will be victorious. So put your trust (in Allah) if ye are indeed believers.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(But) among (their) Allah-fearing men were two on whom Allah had bestowed His grace: They said: "Assault them at the (proper) Gate: when once ye are in, victory will be yours; But on Allah put your trust if ye have faith."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( قال رجلان من الذين يخافون أنعم الله عليهما ) أي : فلما نكل بنو إسرائيل عن طاعة الله ومتابعة رسول الله موسى عليه السلام ، حرضهم رجلان لله عليهما نعمة عظيمة ، وهما ممن يخاف أمر الله ويخشى عقابه .

وقرأ بعضهم : ( قال رجلان من الذين يخافون ) أي : ممن لهم مهابة وموضع من الناس . ويقال : إنهما " يوشع بن نون " و " كالب بن يوفنا " ، قاله ابن عباس ومجاهد وعكرمة وعطية والسدي والربيع بن أنس وغير واحد من السلف ، والخلف ، رحمهم الله ، فقالا ( ادخلوا عليهم الباب فإذا دخلتموه فإنكم غالبون وعلى الله فتوكلوا إن كنتم مؤمنين ) أي : متى توكلتم على الله واتبعتم أمره ، ووافقتم رسوله ، نصركم الله على أعدائكم وأيدكم وظفركم بهم ، ودخلتم البلدة التي كتبها الله لكم . فلم ينفع ذاك فيهم شيئا .
