Quran 5:36

Surah Al-Maaida, Verse 36

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ أَنَّ لَهُم مَّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا وَمِثْلَهُۥ مَعَهُۥ لِيَفْتَدُوا۟ بِهِۦ مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ مَا تُقُبِّلَ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Word by word

إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieve لَوْ law if أَنَّ anna that لَهُم lahum for them مَّا mā (is) what فِى fī (is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth جَمِيعًۭا jamīʿan all وَمِثْلَهُۥ wamith'lahu and the like of it مَعَهُۥ maʿahu with it لِيَفْتَدُوا۟ liyaftadū to ransom themselves بِهِۦ bihi with it مِنْ min from عَذَابِ ʿadhābi (the) punishment يَوْمِ yawmi (of the) Day ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection مَا mā not تُقُبِّلَ tuqubbila will be accepted مِنْهُمْ ۖ min'hum from them وَلَهُمْ walahum and for them عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment أَلِيمٌۭ alīmun painful

Transliteration

Inna allatheena kafaroo law annalahum ma fee al-ardi jameeAAan wamithlahu maAAahuliyaftadoo bihi min AAathabi yawmi alqiyamati matuqubbila minhum walahum AAathabun aleem

Translations

As for those who disbelieve, lo! if all that is in the earth were theirs, and as much again therewith, to ransom them from the doom on the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them. Theirs will be a painful doom.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

As to those who reject Faith,- if they had everything on earth, and twice repeated, to give as ransom for the penalty of the Day of Judgment, it would never be accepted of them, theirs would be a grievous penalty.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم أخبر تعالى بما أعد لأعدائه الكفار من العذاب والنكال يوم القيامة ، فقال : ( إن الذين كفروا لو أن لهم ما في الأرض جميعا ومثله معه ليفتدوا به من عذاب يوم القيامة ما تقبل منهم ولهم عذاب أليم ) أي : لو أن أحدهم جاء يوم القيامة بملء الأرض ذهبا ، وبمثله ليفتدي بذلك من عذاب الله الذي قد أحاط به وتيقن وصوله إليه ما تقبل ذلك منه بل لا مندوحة عنه ولا محيص له ولا مناص ; ولهذا قال : ( ولهم عذاب أليم ) أي : موجع
