Quran 5:46

Surah Al-Maaida, Verse 46

وَقَفَّيْنَا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِم بِعِيسَى ٱبْنِ مَرْيَمَ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ ٱلْإِنجِيلَ فِيهِ هُدًى وَنُورٌ وَمُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَهُدًى وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

Word by word

وَقَفَّيْنَا waqaffaynā And We sent عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā on ءَاثَـٰرِهِم āthārihim their footsteps بِعِيسَى biʿīsā Isa ٱبْنِ ib'ni son مَرْيَمَ maryama (of) Maryam مُصَدِّقًۭا muṣaddiqan confirming لِّمَا limā what بَيْنَ bayna (was) between يَدَيْهِ yadayhi his hands مِنَ mina of ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ ۖ l-tawrāti the Taurat وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ waātaynāhu and We gave him ٱلْإِنجِيلَ l-injīla the Injeel فِيهِ fīhi in it هُدًۭى hudan (was) Guidance وَنُورٌۭ wanūrun and light وَمُصَدِّقًۭا wamuṣaddiqan and confirming لِّمَا limā what بَيْنَ bayna (was) between يَدَيْهِ yadayhi his hands مِنَ mina of ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ l-tawrāti the Taurat وَهُدًۭى wahudan and a Guidance وَمَوْعِظَةًۭ wamawʿiẓatan and an admonition لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ lil'muttaqīna for the God conscious

Transliteration

Waqaffayna AAala atharihimbiAAeesa ibni maryama musaddiqan lima baynayadayhi mina attawrati waataynahual-injeela feehi hudan wanoorun wamusaddiqan limabayna yadayhi mina attawrati wahudan wamawAAithatanlilmuttaqeen

Translations

And We caused Jesus, son of Mary, to follow in their footsteps, confirming that which was (revealed) before him in the Torah, and We bestowed on him the Gospel wherein is guidance and a light, confirming that which was (revealed) before it in the Torah - a guidance and an admonition unto those who ward off (evil).

And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light, and confirmation of the Law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قول تعالى : " وقفينا " أي : أتبعنا ( على آثارهم ) يعني : أنبياء بني إسرائيل [ عليه السلام ] ( بعيسى ابن مريم مصدقا لما بين يديه من التوراة ) أي : مؤمنا بها حاكما بما فيها ( وآتيناه الإنجيل فيه هدى ونور ) أي : هدى إلى الحق ، ونور يستضاء به في إزالة الشبهات وحل المشكلات . ( ومصدقا لما بين يديه من التوراة ) أي : متبعا لها ، غير مخالف لما فيها ، إلا في القليل مما بين لبني إسرائيل بعض ما كانوا يختلفون فيه ، كما قال تعالى إخبارا عن المسيح أنه قال لبني إسرائيل : ( ولأحل لكم بعض الذي حرم عليكم ) [ آل عمران : 50 ] ; ولهذا كان المشهور من قولي العلماء أن الإنجيل نسخ بعض أحكام التوراة .

وقوله : ( وهدى وموعظة للمتقين ) أي : وجعلنا الإنجيل ) هدى ) يهتدى به ، ( وموعظة ) أي : وزاجرا عن ارتكاب المحارم والمآثم ( للمتقين ) أي : لمن اتقى الله وخاف وعيده وعقابه .
