Quran 57:29

Surah Al-Hadid, Verse 29

لِّئَلَّا يَعْلَمَ أَهْلُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ أَلَّا يَقْدِرُونَ عَلَىٰ شَىْءٍ مِّن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱلْفَضْلَ بِيَدِ ٱللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلْفَضْلِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

Word by word

لِّئَلَّا li-allā So that يَعْلَمَ yaʿlama may know أَهْلُ ahlu (the) People ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ l-kitābi (of) the Book أَلَّا allā that not يَقْدِرُونَ yaqdirūna they have power عَلَىٰ ʿalā over شَىْءٍۢ shayin anything مِّن min from فَضْلِ faḍli (the) Bounty ٱللَّهِ ۙ l-lahi (of) Allah وَأَنَّ wa-anna and that ٱلْفَضْلَ l-faḍla the Bounty بِيَدِ biyadi (is) in Allah's Hand ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (is) in Allah's Hand يُؤْتِيهِ yu'tīhi He gives it مَن man whom يَشَآءُ ۚ yashāu He wills وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah ذُو dhū (is) the Possessor of Bounty ٱلْفَضْلِ l-faḍli (is) the Possessor of Bounty ٱلْعَظِيمِ l-ʿaẓīmi the Great

Transliteration

Li-alla yaAAlama ahlu alkitabialla yaqdiroona AAala shay-in min fadli Allahiwaanna alfadla biyadi Allahi yu/teehi man yashaowallahu thoo alfadli alAAatheem

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

That the People of the Scripture may know that they control naught of the bounty of Allah, but that the bounty is in Allah's hand to give to whom He will. And Allah is of Infinite Bounty.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

That the People of the Book may know that they have no power whatever over the Grace of Allah, that (His) Grace is (entirely) in His Hand, to bestow it on whomsoever He wills. For Allah is the Lord of Grace abounding.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ولهذا قال تعالى : ( لئلا يعلم أهل الكتاب ألا يقدرون على شيء من فضل الله ) أي : ليتحققوا أنهم لا يقدرون على رد ما أعطاه الله ، ولا [ على ] إعطاء ما منع الله ، ( وأن الفضل بيد الله يؤتيه من يشاء والله ذو الفضل العظيم )

قال ابن جرير : ( لئلا يعلم ) أي : ليعلم وقد ذكر عن ابن مسعود أنه قرأها : " لكي يعلم " . وكذا حطان بن عبد الله ، وسعيد بن جبير ، قال ابن جرير : لأن العرب تجعل " لا " صلة في كل كلام دخل في أوله وآخره جحد غير مصرح ، فالسابق كقوله : ( ما منعك ألا تسجد ) [ الأعراف : 12 ] ، ( وما يشعركم أنها إذا جاءت لا يؤمنون ) [ الأنعام : 109 ] ، ( وحرام على قرية أهلكناها أنهم لا يرجعون ) [ الأنبياء : 95 ] .
