Quran 6:137

Surah Al-An'aam, Verse 137

وَكَذَٰلِكَ زَيَّنَ لِكَثِيرٍ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ قَتْلَ أَوْلَٰدِهِمْ شُرَكَآؤُهُمْ لِيُرْدُوهُمْ وَلِيَلْبِسُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ دِينَهُمْ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا فَعَلُوهُ فَذَرْهُمْ وَمَا يَفْتَرُونَ

Word by word

وَكَذَٰلِكَ wakadhālika And likewise زَيَّنَ zayyana made pleasing لِكَثِيرٍۢ likathīrin to many مِّنَ mina of ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ l-mush'rikīna the polytheists قَتْلَ qatla (the) killing أَوْلَـٰدِهِمْ awlādihim (of) their children شُرَكَآؤُهُمْ shurakāuhum their partners لِيُرْدُوهُمْ liyur'dūhum so that they may ruin them وَلِيَلْبِسُوا۟ waliyalbisū and that they make confusing عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim to them دِينَهُمْ ۖ dīnahum their religion وَلَوْ walaw And if شَآءَ shāa (had) willed ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah مَا mā not فَعَلُوهُ ۖ faʿalūhu (would) they have done so فَذَرْهُمْ fadharhum So leave them وَمَا wamā and what يَفْتَرُونَ yaftarūna they invent

Transliteration

Wakathalika zayyana likatheerin minaalmushrikeena qatla awladihim shurakaohumliyurdoohum waliyalbisoo AAalayhim deenahum walaw shaa Allahuma faAAaloohu fatharhum wama yaftaroon

Thus have their (so-called) partners (of Allah) made the killing of their children to seem fair unto many of the idolaters, that they may ruin them and make their faith obscure for them. Had Allah willed (it otherwise), they had not done so. So leave them alone with their devices.

Even so, in the eyes of most of the pagans, their "partners" made alluring the slaughter of their children, in order to lead them to their own destruction, and cause confusion in their religion. If Allah had willed, they would not have done so: But leave alone them and their inventions.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى : وكما زينت الشياطين لهؤلاء المشركين أن يجعلوا لله مما ذرأ من الحرث والأنعام نصيبا ، كذلك زينوا لهم قتل أولادهم خشية الإملاق ، ووأد البنات خشية العار .

وقال علي بن أبي طلحة ، عن ابن عباس : وكذلك زين لكثير من المشركين قتل أولادهم شركاؤهم : زينوا لهم قتل أولادهم .

وقال مجاهد : ( شركاؤهم ) شياطينهم ، يأمرونهم أن يئدوا أولادهم خشية العيلة . وقال السدي : أمرتهم الشياطين أن يقتلوا البنات . وإما ( ليردوهم ) فيهلكوهم ، وإما ( ليلبسوا عليهم دينهم ) أي : فيخلطون عليهم دينهم .

ونحو ذلك قال قتادة ، وعبد الرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم .

وهذا كقوله تعالى : ( وإذا بشر أحدهم بالأنثى ظل وجهه مسودا وهو كظيم يتوارى من القوم من سوء ما بشر به أيمسكه على هون أم يدسه في التراب ألا ساء ما يحكمون ) [ النحل : 58 ، 59 ] ، وقال تعالى : ( وإذا الموءودة سئلت بأي ذنب قتلت ) [ التكوير : 8 ، 9 ] . وقد كانوا أيضا يقتلون الأولاد من الإملاق ، وهو الفقر ، أو خشية الإملاق أن يحصل لهم في تانئ المال وقد نهاهم الله عن قتل أولادهم لذلك وإنما كان هذا كله من شرع الشيطان تزيينه لهم ذلك .

قال تعالى : ( ولو شاء الله ما فعلوه ) أي : كل هذا واقع بمشيئته تعالى وإرادته واختياره لذلك كونا ، وله الحكمة التامة في ذلك ، فلا يسأل عما يفعل وهم يسألون . ( فذرهم وما يفترون ) أي : فدعهم واجتنبهم وما هم فيه ، فسيحكم الله بينك وبينهم .
