Quran 60:9

Surah Al-Mumtahana, Verse 9

إِنَّمَا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ قَٰتَلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَأَخْرَجُوكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِكُمْ وَظَٰهَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْرَاجِكُمْ أَن تَوَلَّوْهُمْ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُمْ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ

Word by word

إِنَّمَا innamā Only يَنْهَىٰكُمُ yanhākumu forbids you ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah عَنِ ʿani from ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who قَـٰتَلُوكُمْ qātalūkum fight you فِى fī in ٱلدِّينِ l-dīni the religion وَأَخْرَجُوكُم wa-akhrajūkum and drive you out مِّن min of دِيَـٰرِكُمْ diyārikum your homes وَظَـٰهَرُوا۟ waẓāharū and support عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā in إِخْرَاجِكُمْ ikh'rājikum your expulsion أَن an that تَوَلَّوْهُمْ ۚ tawallawhum you make them allies وَمَن waman And whoever يَتَوَلَّهُمْ yatawallahum makes them allies فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ fa-ulāika then those هُمُ humu [they] ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ l-ẓālimūna (are) the wrongdoers

Transliteration

Innama yanhakumu AllahuAAani allatheena qatalookum fee addeeniwaakhrajookum min diyarikum wathaharooAAala ikhrajikum an tawallawhum waman yatawallahumfaola-ika humu aththalimoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Allah forbiddeth you only those who warred against you on account of religion and have driven you out from your homes and helped to drive you out, that ye make friends of them. Whosoever maketh friends of them - (All) such are wrong-doers.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( إنما ينهاكم الله عن الذين قاتلوكم في الدين وأخرجوكم من دياركم وظاهروا على إخراجكم أن تولوهم ) أي : إنما ينهاكم عن موالاة هؤلاء الذين ناصبوكم العداوة ، فقاتلوكم وأخرجوكم ، وعاونوا على إخراجكم ، ينهاكم الله عن موالاتهم ويأمركم بمعاداتهم . ثم أكد الوعيد على موالاتهم فقال : ( ومن يتولهم فأولئك هم الظالمون ) كقوله ( يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تتخذوا اليهود والنصارى أولياء بعضهم أولياء بعض ومن يتولهم منكم فإنه منهم إن الله لا يهدي القوم الظالمين ) [ المائدة : 51 ] .
