Quran 7:101

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 101

تِلْكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآئِهَا وَلَقَدْ جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ فَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِمَا كَذَّبُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

Word by word

تِلْكَ til'ka These ٱلْقُرَىٰ l-qurā (were) the cities نَقُصُّ naquṣṣu We relate عَلَيْكَ ʿalayka to you مِنْ min of أَنۢبَآئِهَا ۚ anbāihā their news وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly جَآءَتْهُمْ jāathum came to them رُسُلُهُم rusuluhum their Messengers بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ bil-bayināti with clear proofs فَمَا famā but not كَانُوا۟ kānū they were لِيُؤْمِنُوا۟ liyu'minū to believe بِمَا bimā in what كَذَّبُوا۟ kadhabū they (had) denied مِن min from قَبْلُ ۚ qablu before كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Thus يَطْبَعُ yaṭbaʿu (has been) put a seal ٱللَّهُ l-lahu (by) Allah عَلَىٰ ʿalā on قُلُوبِ qulūbi (the) hearts ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ l-kāfirīna (of) the disbelievers

Transliteration

Tilka alqura naqussu AAalaykamin anba-iha walaqad jaat-hum rusuluhum bilbayyinatifama kanoo liyu/minoo bima kaththaboomin qablu kathalika yatbaAAu Allahu AAalaquloobi alkafireen

Translations

Such were the townships. We relate some tidings of them unto thee (Muhammad). Their messengers verily came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they could not believe because they had before denied. Thus doth Allah print upon the hearts of disbelievers (that they hear not).

Such were the towns whose story We (thus) relate unto thee: There came indeed to them their messengers with clear (signs): But they would not believe what they had rejected before. Thus doth Allah seal up the hearts of those who reject faith.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

لما قص تعالى على نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم خبر قوم نوح ، وهود ، وصالح ، ولوط ، وشعيب [ عليهم الصلاة والسلام ] وما كان من إهلاكه الكافرين وإنجائه المؤمنين ، وأنه تعالى أعذر إليهم بأن بين لهم الحق بالحجج على ألسنة الرسل ، صلوات الله عليهم أجمعين ، قال تعالى : ( تلك القرى نقص عليك ) أي : يا محمد ( من أنبائها ) أي : من أخبارها ، ( ولقد جاءتهم رسلهم بالبينات ) أي : بالحجج على صدقهم فيما أخبروهم به ، كما قال تعالى : ( وما كنا معذبين حتى نبعث رسولا ) [ الإسراء : 15 ] وقال تعالى : ( ذلك من أنباء القرى نقصه عليك منها قائم وحصيد وما ظلمناهم ولكن ظلموا أنفسهم ) [ هود : 101 ، 102 ]

وقوله تعالى : ( فما كانوا ليؤمنوا بما كذبوا من قبل ) الباء سببية ، أي : فما كانوا ليؤمنوا بما جاءتهم به الرسل بسبب تكذيبهم بالحق أول ما ورد عليهم . حكاه ابن عطية ، رحمه الله ، وهو متجه حسن ، كقوله : ( وما يشعركم أنها إذا جاءت لا يؤمنون ونقلب أفئدتهم وأبصارهم كما لم يؤمنوا به أول مرة ونذرهم في طغيانهم يعمهون ) [ الأنعام : 110 ، 111 ] ; ولهذا قال هنا : ( كذلك يطبع الله على قلوب الكافرين)
