Quran 7:130

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 130

وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَآ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ بِٱلسِّنِينَ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ

Word by word

وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly أَخَذْنَآ akhadhnā We seized ءَالَ āla (the) people فِرْعَوْنَ fir'ʿawna (of) Firaun بِٱلسِّنِينَ bil-sinīna with years (of famine) وَنَقْصٍۢ wanaqṣin and a deficit مِّنَ mina of ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ l-thamarāti [the] fruits لَعَلَّهُمْ laʿallahum so that they may يَذَّكَّرُونَ yadhakkarūna receive admonition

Transliteration

Walaqad akhathna alafirAAawna bissineena wanaqsin mina aththamaratilaAAallahum yaththakkaroon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And we straitened Pharaoh's folk with famine and dearth of fruits, that peradventure they might heed.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

We punished the people of Pharaoh with years (of droughts) and shortness of crops; that they might receive admonition.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى : ( 131 ) ولقد أخذنا آل فرعون ) أي : اختبرناهم وامتحناهم وابتليناهم ) بالسنين ) وهي سني الجوع بسبب قلة الزروع ( ونقص من الثمرات ) قال مجاهد : وهو دون ذلك .

وقال أبو إسحاق ، عن رجاء بن حيوة : كانت النخلة لا تحمل إلا ثمرة واحدة . ( لعلهم يذكرون )
