Quran 7:48

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 48

وَنَادَىٰٓ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأَعْرَافِ رِجَالًا يَعْرِفُونَهُم بِسِيمَىٰهُمْ قَالُوا۟ مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنكُمْ جَمْعُكُمْ وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ

Word by word

وَنَادَىٰٓ wanādā And (will) call out أَصْحَـٰبُ aṣḥābu (the) companions ٱلْأَعْرَافِ l-aʿrāfi (of) the heights رِجَالًۭا rijālan (to) men يَعْرِفُونَهُم yaʿrifūnahum whom they recognize بِسِيمَىٰهُمْ bisīmāhum by their marks قَالُوا۟ qālū saying مَآ mā Not أَغْنَىٰ aghnā (has) availed عَنكُمْ ʿankum [to] you جَمْعُكُمْ jamʿukum your gathering وَمَا wamā and what كُنتُمْ kuntum you were تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ tastakbirūna arrogant (about)

Transliteration

Wanada as-habual-aAArafi rijalan yaAArifoonahum biseemahumqaloo ma aghna AAankum jamAAukum wamakuntum tastakbiroon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And the dwellers on the Heights call unto men whom they know by their marks, (saying): What did your multitude and that in which ye took your pride avail you?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The men on the heights will call to certain men whom they will know from their marks, saying: "Of what profit to you were your hoards and your arrogant ways?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قول الله تعالى مخبرا عن تقريع أهل الأعراف لرجال من صناديد المشركين وقادتهم ، يعرفونهم في النار بسيماهم : ( ما أغنى عنكم جمعكم ) أي : كثرتكم ، ( وما كنتم تستكبرون ) أي : لا ينفعكم كثرتكم ولا جموعكم من عذاب الله ، بل صرتم إلى ما صرتم فيه من العذاب والنكال .
