Quran 7:85

Surah Al-A'raaf, Verse 85

وَإِلَىٰ مَدْيَنَ أَخَاهُمْ شُعَيْبًا قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥ قَدْ جَآءَتْكُم بَيِّنَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ فَأَوْفُوا۟ ٱلْكَيْلَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشْيَآءَهُمْ وَلَا تُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بَعْدَ إِصْلَٰحِهَا ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Word by word

وَإِلَىٰ wa-ilā And to مَدْيَنَ madyana Madyan أَخَاهُمْ akhāhum his brother شُعَيْبًۭا ۗ shuʿayban Shuaib قَالَ qāla He said يَـٰقَوْمِ yāqawmi O my people ٱعْبُدُوا۟ uʿ'budū Worship ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah مَا mā not لَكُم lakum for you مِّنْ min any إِلَـٰهٍ ilāhin god غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ ghayruhu other than Him قَدْ qad Verily جَآءَتْكُم jāatkum has came to you بَيِّنَةٌۭ bayyinatun a clear proof مِّن min from رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ rabbikum your Lord فَأَوْفُوا۟ fa-awfū So give full ٱلْكَيْلَ l-kayla [the] measure وَٱلْمِيزَانَ wal-mīzāna and the weight وَلَا walā and (do) not تَبْخَسُوا۟ tabkhasū deprive ٱلنَّاسَ l-nāsa [the] people أَشْيَآءَهُمْ ashyāahum in their things وَلَا walā and (do) not تُفْسِدُوا۟ tuf'sidū cause corruption فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth بَعْدَ baʿda after إِصْلَـٰحِهَا ۚ iṣ'lāḥihā its reformation ذَٰلِكُمْ dhālikum That خَيْرٌۭ khayrun (is) better لَّكُمْ lakum for you إِن in if كُنتُم kuntum you are مُّؤْمِنِينَ mu'minīna believers

Transliteration

Wa-ila madyana akhahumshuAAayban qala ya qawmi oAAbudoo Allaha malakum min ilahin ghayruhu qad jaatkum bayyinatunmin rabbikum faawfoo alkayla walmeezana walatabkhasoo annasa ashyaahum walatufsidoo fee al-ardi baAAda islahiha thalikumkhayrun lakum in kuntum mu/mineen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And unto Midian (We sent) their brother, Shu'eyb. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Lo! a clear proof hath come unto you from your Lord; so give full measure and full weight and wrong not mankind in their goods, and work not confusion in the earth after the fair ordering thereof. That will be better for you, if ye are believers.

To the Madyan people We sent Shu'aib, one of their own brethren: he said: "O my people! worship Allah; Ye have no other god but Him. Now hath come unto you a clear (Sign) from your Lord! Give just measure and weight, nor withhold from the people the things that are their due; and do no mischief on the earth after it has been set in order: that will be best for you, if ye have Faith.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قال محمد بن إسحاق : هم من سلالة " مدين بن إبراهيم " . وشعيب هو ابن ميكيل بن يشجر قال : واسمه بالسريانية : " يثرون " .

قلت : وتطلق مدين على القبيلة ، وعلى المدينة ، وهي التي بقرب " معان " من طريق الحجاز ، قال الله تعالى : ( ولما ورد ماء مدين وجد عليه أمة من الناس يسقون ) [ القصص : 23 ] وهم أصحاب الأيكة ، كما سنذكره إن شاء الله ، وبه الثقة .

( قال يا قوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من إله غيره ) هذه دعوة الرسل كلهم ، ( قد جاءتكم بينة من ربكم ) أي : قد أقام الله الحجج والبينات على صدق ما جئتكم به . ثم وعظهم في معاملتهم الناس بأن يوفوا المكيال والميزان ، ولا يبخسوا الناس أشياءهم ، أي : لا يخونوا الناس في أموالهم ويأخذوها على وجه البخس ، وهو نقص المكيال والميزان خفية وتدليسا ، كما قال تعالى : ( ويل للمطففين [ الذين إذا اكتالوا على الناس يستوفون وإذا كالوهم أو وزنوهم يخسرون ألا يظن أولئك أنهم مبعوثون ليوم عظيم يوم يقوم الناس ] لرب العالمين ) [ المطففين : 1 - 6 ] وهذا تهديد شديد ، ووعيد أكيد ، نسأل الله العافية منه .

ثم قال تعالى إخبارا عن شعيب ، الذي يقال له : " خطيب الأنبياء " ، لفصاحة عبارته ، وجزالة موعظته .
