Quran 8:43

Surah Al-Anfaal, Verse 43

إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًا وَلَوْ أَرَىٰكَهُمْ كَثِيرًا لَّفَشِلْتُمْ وَلَتَنَٰزَعْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَلَّمَ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ

Word by word

إِذْ idh When يُرِيكَهُمُ yurīkahumu you (where) shown them ٱللَّهُ l-lahu (by) Allah فِى fī in مَنَامِكَ manāmika your dream قَلِيلًۭا ۖ qalīlan (as) few وَلَوْ walaw and if أَرَىٰكَهُمْ arākahum He had shown them to you كَثِيرًۭا kathīran (as) many لَّفَشِلْتُمْ lafashil'tum surely you would have lost courage وَلَتَنَـٰزَعْتُمْ walatanāzaʿtum and surely you would have disputed فِى fī in ٱلْأَمْرِ l-amri the matter وَلَـٰكِنَّ walākinna but ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah سَلَّمَ ۗ sallama saved (you) إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, He عَلِيمٌۢ ʿalīmun (is) All-Knower بِذَاتِ bidhāti of what is in ٱلصُّدُورِ l-ṣudūri the breasts

Transliteration

Ith yureekahumu Allahu fee manamikaqaleelan walaw arakahum katheeran lafashiltum walatanazaAAtumfee al-amri walakinna Allaha sallama innahuAAaleemun bithati assudoor

Translations

When Allah showed them unto thee (O Muhammad) in thy dream as few in number, and if He had shown them to thee as many, ye (Muslims) would have faltered and would have quarrelled over the affair. But Allah saved (you). Lo! He knoweth what is in the breasts (of men).

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Remember in thy dream Allah showed them to thee as few: if He had shown them to thee as many, ye would surely have been discouraged, and ye would surely have disputed in (your) decision; but Allah saved (you): for He knoweth well the (secrets) of (all) hearts.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قال مجاهد : أراه الله إياهم في منامه قليلا فأخبر النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أصحابه بذلك ، فكان تثبيتا لهم .

وكذا قال ابن إسحاق وغير واحد . وحكى ابن جرير عن بعضهم أنه رآهم بعينه التي ينام بها .

وقد روى ابن أبي حاتم : حدثنا أبي ، حدثنا يوسف بن موسى المدبر ، حدثنا أبو قتيبة ، عن سهل السراج ، عن الحسن في قوله : ( إذ يريكهم الله في منامك قليلا ) قال : بعينك .

وهذا القول غريب ، وقد صرح بالمنام هاهنا ، فلا حاجة إلى التأويل الذي لا دليل عليه .

وقوله : ( ولو أراكهم كثيرا لفشلتم ) أي : لجبنتم عنهم واختلفتم فيما بينكم ، ( ولكن الله سلم ) أي : من ذلك : بأن أراكهم قليلا ( إنه عليم بذات الصدور ) أي : بما تجنه الضمائر ، وتنطوي عليه الأحشاء ، فيعلم خائنة الأعين وما تخفي الصدور .
