Quran 9:61

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 61

وَمِنْهُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ ٱلنَّبِىَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَّكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Word by word

وَمِنْهُمُ wamin'humu And among them ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (are) those who يُؤْذُونَ yu'dhūna hurt ٱلنَّبِىَّ l-nabiya the Prophet وَيَقُولُونَ wayaqūlūna and they say هُوَ huwa He is أُذُنٌۭ ۚ udhunun (all) ear قُلْ qul Say أُذُنُ udhunu An ear خَيْرٍۢ khayrin (of) goodness لَّكُمْ lakum for you يُؤْمِنُ yu'minu he believes بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi in Allah وَيُؤْمِنُ wayu'minu and believes لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ lil'mu'minīna the believers وَرَحْمَةٌۭ waraḥmatun and (is) a mercy لِّلَّذِينَ lilladhīna to those who ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū believe مِنكُمْ ۚ minkum among you وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who يُؤْذُونَ yu'dhūna hurt رَسُولَ rasūla (the) Messenger ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah لَهُمْ lahum for them عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment أَلِيمٌۭ alīmun painful

Transliteration

Waminhumu allatheena yu/thoonaannabiyya wayaqooloona huwa othunun qul othunukhayrin lakum yu/minu billahi wayu/minulilmu/mineena warahmatun lillatheena amanoominkum wallatheena yu/thoona rasoola Allahilahum AAathabun aleem

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And of them are those who vex the Prophet and say: He is only a hearer. Say: A hearer of good for you, who believeth in Allah and is true to the believers, and a mercy for such of you as believe. Those who vex the messenger of Allah, for them there is a painful doom.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Among them are men who molest the Prophet and say, "He is (all) ear." Say, "He listens to what is best for you: he believes in Allah, has faith in the Believers, and is a Mercy to those of you who believe." But those who molest the Messenger will have a grievous penalty.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى : ومن المنافقين قوم يؤذون رسول - الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - بالكلام فيه ويقولون : ( هو أذن ) أي : من قال له شيئا صدقه ، ومن حدثه فينا صدقه ، فإذا جئنا وحلفنا له صدقنا . روي معناه عن ابن عباس ، ومجاهد ، وقتادة . قال الله تعالى : ( قل أذن خير لكم ) أي : هو أذن خير ، يعرف الصادق من الكاذب ، ( يؤمن بالله ويؤمن للمؤمنين ) أي : ويصدق المؤمنين ، ( ورحمة للذين آمنوا منكم ) أي : وهو حجة على الكافرين ؛ ولهذا قال : ( والذين يؤذون رسول الله لهم عذاب أليم ) .
