Quran 9:70

Surah At-Tawba, Verse 70

أَلَمْ يَأْتِهِمْ نَبَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَقَوْمِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَأَصْحَٰبِ مَدْيَنَ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَٰتِ أَتَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

Word by word

أَلَمْ alam Has not يَأْتِهِمْ yatihim come to them نَبَأُ naba-u (the) news ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who مِن min (were) before them قَبْلِهِمْ qablihim (were) before them قَوْمِ qawmi (the) people نُوحٍۢ nūḥin (of) Nuh وَعَادٍۢ waʿādin and Aad وَثَمُودَ wathamūda and Thamud وَقَوْمِ waqawmi and (the) people إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ib'rāhīma (of) Ibrahim وَأَصْحَـٰبِ wa-aṣḥābi and (the) companions مَدْيَنَ madyana (of) Madyan وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتِ ۚ wal-mu'tafikāti and the towns overturned أَتَتْهُمْ atathum Came to them رُسُلُهُم rusuluhum their Messengers بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ۖ bil-bayināti with clear proofs فَمَا famā And not كَانَ kāna was ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ liyaẓlimahum to wrong them وَلَـٰكِن walākin but كَانُوٓا۟ kānū they were (to) أَنفُسَهُمْ anfusahum themselves يَظْلِمُونَ yaẓlimūna doing wrong

Transliteration

Alam ya/tihim nabao allatheena minqablihim qawmi noohin waAAadin wathamooda waqawmiibraheema waas-habi madyana walmu/tafikatiatat-hum rusuluhum bilbayyinati fama kanaAllahu liyathlimahum walakin kanooanfusahum yathlimoon

Translations

Hath not the fame of those before them reached them - the folk of Noah, A'ad, Thamud, the folk of Abraham, the dwellers of Midian and the disasters (which befell them)? Their messengers (from Allah) came unto them with proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty). So Allah surely wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves.

Hath not the story reached them of those before them?- the People of Noah, and 'Ad, and Thamud; the People of Abraham, the men of Midian, and the cities overthrown. To them came their messengers with clear signs. It is not Allah Who wrongs them, but they wrong their own souls.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى واعظا لهؤلاء المنافقين المكذبين للرسل : ( ألم يأتهم نبأ الذين من قبلهم ) أي : ألم تخبروا خبر من كان قبلكم من الأمم المكذبة للرسل ( قوم نوح ) وما أصابهم من الغرق العام لجميع أهل الأرض ، إلا من آمن بعبده ورسوله نوح ، عليه السلام ، ( وعاد ) كيف أهلكوا بالريح العقيم ، لما كذبوا هودا ، عليه السلام ، ( وثمود ) كيف أخذتهم الصيحة لما كذبوا صالحا - عليه السلام - وعقروا الناقة ، ( وقوم إبراهيم ) كيف نصره الله عليهم وأيده بالمعجزات الظاهرة عليهم ، وأهلك ملكهم النمروذ بن كنعان بن كوش الكنعاني لعنه الله ، ( وأصحاب مدين ) وهم قوم شعيب - عليه السلام - وكيف أصابتهم الرجفة والصيحة وعذاب يوم الظلة ، ( والمؤتفكات ) قوم لوط ، وقد كانوا يسكنون في مدائن ، وقال في الآية الأخرى : ( والمؤتفكة أهوى ) [ النجم : 53 ، ] أي : الأمة المؤتفكة ، وقيل : أم قراهم ، وهي " سدوم " . والغرض : أن الله تعالى أهلكهم عن آخرهم بتكذيبهم نبي الله لوطا - عليه السلام - وإتيانهم الفاحشة التي لم يسبقهم بها أحد من العالمين .

( أتتهم رسلهم بالبينات ) أي : بالحجج والدلائل القاطعات ، ( فما كان الله ليظلمهم ) أي : بإهلاكه إياهم ؛ لأنه أقام عليهم الحجة بإرسال الرسل وإزاحة العلل ( ولكن كانوا أنفسهم يظلمون ) أي : بتكذيبهم الرسل ومخالفتهم الحق ، فصاروا إلى ما صاروا إليه من العذاب والدمار .
