Quran 10:18

Surah Yunus, Verse 18

وَيَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمْ وَيَقُولُونَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ شُفَعَٰٓؤُنَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ قُلْ أَتُنَبِّـُٔونَ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا لَا يَعْلَمُ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَلَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ

Word by word

وَيَعْبُدُونَ wayaʿbudūna And they worship مِن min from دُونِ dūni other than ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah مَا mā that (which) لَا lā (does) not يَضُرُّهُمْ yaḍurruhum harm them وَلَا walā and not يَنفَعُهُمْ yanfaʿuhum benefit them وَيَقُولُونَ wayaqūlūna and they say هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ hāulāi These شُفَعَـٰٓؤُنَا shufaʿāunā (are) our intercessors عِندَ ʿinda with ٱللَّهِ ۚ l-lahi Allah قُلْ qul Say أَتُنَبِّـُٔونَ atunabbiūna Do you inform ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah بِمَا bimā of what لَا lā not يَعْلَمُ yaʿlamu he knows فِى fī in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَلَا walā and not فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ l-arḍi the earth سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ sub'ḥānahu Glorified is He وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ wataʿālā and Exalted عَمَّا ʿammā above what يُشْرِكُونَ yush'rikūna they associate (with Him)

Transliteration

WayaAAbudoona min dooni Allahi mala yadurruhum wala yanfaAAuhum wayaqooloonahaola-i shufaAAaona AAinda Allahiqul atunabbi-oona Allaha bima la yaAAlamufee assamawati wala fee al-ardisubhanahu wataAAala AAamma yushrikoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

They worship beside Allah that which neither hurteth them nor profiteth them, and they say: These are our intercessors with Allah. Say: Would ye inform Allah of (something) that He knoweth not in the heavens or in the earth? Praised be He and High Exalted above all that ye associate (with Him)!

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They serve, besides Allah, things that hurt them not nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allah." Say: "Do ye indeed inform Allah of something He knows not, in the heavens or on earth?- Glory to Him! and far is He above the partners they ascribe (to Him)!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ينكر تعالى على المشركين الذين عبدوا مع الله غيره ، ظانين أن تلك الآلهة تنفعهم شفاعتها عند الله ، فأخبر تعالى أنها لا تنفع ولا تضر ولا تملك شيئا ، ولا يقع شيء مما يزعمون فيها ، ولا يكون هذا أبدا ؛ ولهذا قال تعالى : ( قل أتنبئون الله بما لا يعلم في السماوات ولا في الأرض ) .

وقال ابن جرير : معناه أتخبرون الله بما لا يكون في السماوات ولا في الأرض ؟ ثم نزه نفسه عن شركهم وكفرهم ، فقال : ( سبحانه وتعالى عما يشركون ) .
