وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ نُوحٍ إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦ يَٰقَوْمِ إِن كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَيْكُم مَّقَامِى وَتَذْكِيرِى بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ فَأَجْمِعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَكُمْ وَشُرَكَآءَكُمْ ثُمَّ لَا يَكُنْ أَمْرُكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ غُمَّةً ثُمَّ ٱقْضُوٓا۟ إِلَىَّ وَلَا تُنظِرُونِ

Word by word

۞ وَٱتْلُ wa-ut'lu And recite عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim to them نَبَأَ naba-a the news نُوحٍ nūḥin (of) Nuh إِذْ idh when قَالَ qāla he said لِقَوْمِهِۦ liqawmihi to his people يَـٰقَوْمِ yāqawmi O my people إِن in If كَانَ kāna is كَبُرَ kabura hard عَلَيْكُم ʿalaykum on you مَّقَامِى maqāmī my stay وَتَذْكِيرِى watadhkīrī and my reminding بِـَٔايَـٰتِ biāyāti the Signs of Allah ٱللَّهِ l-lahi the Signs of Allah فَعَلَى faʿalā then on ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah تَوَكَّلْتُ tawakkaltu I put my trust فَأَجْمِعُوٓا۟ fa-ajmiʿū So you all resolve أَمْرَكُمْ amrakum your plan وَشُرَكَآءَكُمْ washurakāakum and your partners ثُمَّ thumma Then لَا lā let not be يَكُنْ yakun let not be أَمْرُكُمْ amrukum (in) your plan عَلَيْكُمْ ʿalaykum for you غُمَّةًۭ ghummatan any doubt ثُمَّ thumma Then ٱقْضُوٓا۟ iq'ḍū carry (it out) إِلَىَّ ilayya upon me وَلَا walā and (do) not تُنظِرُونِ tunẓirūni give me respite

Transliteration

Watlu AAalayhim nabaa noohinith qala liqawmihi ya qawmi in kanakabura AAalaykum maqamee watathkeeree bi-ayatiAllahi faAAala Allahi tawakkaltu faajmiAAooamrakum washurakaakum thumma la yakun amrukumAAalaykum ghummatan thumma iqdoo ilayya wala tunthiroon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Recite unto them the story of Noah, when he told his people: O my people! If my sojourn (here) and my reminding you by Allah's revelations are an offence unto you, in Allah have I put my trust, so decide upon your course of action you and your partners. Let not your course of action be in doubt for you. Then have at me, give me no respite.

Relate to them the story of Noah. Behold! he said to his people: "O my people, if it be hard on your (mind) that I should stay (with you) and commemorate the signs of Allah,- yet I put my trust in Allah. Get ye then an agreement about your plan and among your partners, so your plan be on to you dark and dubious. Then pass your sentence on me, and give me no respite.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى لنبيه ، صلوات الله وسلامه عليه : ( واتل عليهم ) أي : أخبرهم واقصص عليهم ، أي : على كفار مكة الذين يكذبونك ويخالفونك ( نبأ نوح ) أي : خبره مع قومه الذين كذبوه ، كيف أهلكهم الله ودمرهم بالغرق أجمعين عن آخرهم ، ليحذر هؤلاء أن يصيبهم من الهلاك والدمار ما أصاب أولئك . ( إذ قال لقومه ياقوم إن كان كبر عليكم ) أي : عظم عليكم ، ( مقامي ) أي فيكم بين أظهركم ، ( وتذكيري ) إياكم ( بآيات الله ) أي : بحججه وبراهينه ، ( فعلى الله توكلت ) أي : فإني لا أبالي ولا أكف عنكم سواء عظم عليكم أو لا ! ( فأجمعوا أمركم وشركاءكم ) أي : فاجتمعوا أنتم وشركاؤكم الذين تدعون من دون الله ، من صنم ووثن ، ( ثم لا يكن أمركم عليكم غمة ) أي : ولا تجعلوا أمركم عليكم ملتبسا ، بل افصلوا حالكم معي ، فإن كنتم تزعمون أنكم محقون ، فاقضوا إلي ولا تنظرون ، أي : ولا تؤخروني ساعة واحدة ، أي : مهما قدرتم فافعلوا ، فإني لا أباليكم ولا أخاف منكم ، لأنكم لستم على شيء ، كما قال هود لقومه : ( إني أشهد الله واشهدوا أني بريء مما تشركون من دونه فكيدوني جميعا ثم لا تنظرون إني توكلت على الله ربي وربكم ما من دابة إلا هو آخذ بناصيتها إن ربي على صراط مستقيم ) [ هود : 54 - 56 ] .
