فَلَوْلَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْقُرُونِ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ أُو۟لُوا۟ بَقِيَّةٍ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْفَسَادِ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّمَّنْ أَنجَيْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَٱتَّبَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مَآ أُتْرِفُوا۟ فِيهِ وَكَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ

Word by word

فَلَوْلَا falawlā So why not كَانَ kāna had been مِنَ mina of ٱلْقُرُونِ l-qurūni the generations مِن min before you قَبْلِكُمْ qablikum before you أُو۟لُوا۟ ulū those possessing a remnant بَقِيَّةٍۢ baqiyyatin those possessing a remnant يَنْهَوْنَ yanhawna forbidding عَنِ ʿani from ٱلْفَسَادِ l-fasādi the corruption فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth إِلَّا illā except قَلِيلًۭا qalīlan a few مِّمَّنْ mimman of those أَنجَيْنَا anjaynā We saved مِنْهُمْ ۗ min'hum among them وَٱتَّبَعَ wa-ittabaʿa But followed ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who ظَلَمُوا۟ ẓalamū did wrong مَآ mā what أُتْرِفُوا۟ ut'rifū luxury they were given فِيهِ fīhi therein وَكَانُوا۟ wakānū and they were مُجْرِمِينَ muj'rimīna criminals

Transliteration

Falawla kana mina alquroonimin qablikum oloo baqiyyatin yanhawna AAani alfasadi feeal-ardi illa qaleelan mimman anjayna minhumwattabaAAa allatheena thalamoo maotrifoo feehi wakanoo mujrimeen

If only there had been among the generations before you men possessing a remnant (of good sense) to warn (their people) from corruption in the earth, as did a few of those whom We saved from them! The wrong-doers followed that by which they were made sapless, and were guilty.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Why were there not, among the generations before you, persons possessed of balanced good sense, prohibiting (men) from mischief in the earth - except a few among them whom We saved (from harm)? But the wrong-doers pursued the enjoyment of the good things of life which were given them, and persisted in sin.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قول تعالى : فهلا وجد من القرون الماضية بقايا من أهل الخير ، ينهون عما كان يقع بينهم من الشرور والمنكرات والفساد في الأرض .

وقوله : ( إلا قليلا ) أي : قد وجد منهم من هذا الضرب قليل ، لم يكونوا كثيرا ، وهم الذين أنجاهم الله عند حلول غيره ، وفجأة نقمه; ولهذا أمر تعالى هذه الأمة الشريفة أن يكون فيها من يأمر بالمعروف وينهى عن المنكر ، كما قال تعالى : ( ولتكن منكم أمة يدعون إلى الخير ويأمرون بالمعروف وينهون عن المنكر وأولئك هم المفلحون ) [ آل عمران : 104 ] . وفي الحديث : " إن الناس إذا رأوا المنكر فلم يغيروه ، أوشك أن يعمهم الله بعقاب " ; ولهذا قال تعالى : ( فلولا كان من القرون من قبلكم أولو بقية ينهون عن الفساد في الأرض إلا قليلا ممن أنجينا منهم ) .

وقوله : ( واتبع الذين ظلموا ما أترفوا فيه ) أي : استمروا على ما هم فيه من المعاصي والمنكرات ، ولم يلتفتوا إلى إنكار أولئك ، حتى فجأهم العذاب ، ( وكانوا مجرمين ) .
