Quran 11:28

Surah Hud, Verse 28

قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّى وَءَاتَىٰنِى رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِهِۦ فَعُمِّيَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا وَأَنتُمْ لَهَا كَٰرِهُونَ

Word by word

قَالَ qāla He said يَـٰقَوْمِ yāqawmi O my people أَرَءَيْتُمْ ara-aytum Do you see إِن in if كُنتُ kuntu I was عَلَىٰ ʿalā on بَيِّنَةٍۢ bayyinatin (the) clear proof مِّن min from رَّبِّى rabbī my Lord وَءَاتَىٰنِى waātānī while He has given me رَحْمَةًۭ raḥmatan mercy مِّنْ min from عِندِهِۦ ʿindihi Himself فَعُمِّيَتْ faʿummiyat but (it) has been obscured عَلَيْكُمْ ʿalaykum from you أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا anul'zimukumūhā should We compel you (to accept) it وَأَنتُمْ wa-antum while you (are) لَهَا lahā averse to it كَـٰرِهُونَ kārihūna averse to it

Transliteration

Qala ya qawmi araaytum inkuntu AAala bayyinatin min rabbee waataneerahmatan min AAindihi faAAummiyat AAalaykum anulzimukumoohawaantum laha karihoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

He said: O my people! Bethink you, if I rely on a clear proof from my Lord and there hath come unto me a mercy from His presence, and it hath been made obscure to you, can we compel you to accept it when ye are averse thereto?

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

He said: "O my people! See ye if (it be that) I have a Clear Sign from my Lord, and that He hath sent Mercy unto me from His own presence, but that the Mercy hath been obscured from your sight? shall we compel you to accept it when ye are averse to it?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى مخبرا عن نوح ما رد على قومه في ذلك : ( أرأيتم إن كنت على بينة من ربي ) أي : على يقين وأمر جلي ، ونبوة صادقة ، وهي الرحمة العظيمة من الله به وبهم ، ( فعميت عليكم ) أي : خفيت عليكم ، فلم تهتدوا إليها ، ولا عرفتم قدرها ، بل بادرتم إلى تكذيبها وردها ، ( أنلزمكموها ) أي : نغصبكم بقبولها وأنتم لها كارهون .
