Quran 12:66

Surah Yusuf, Verse 66

قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُۥ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تُؤْتُونِ مَوْثِقًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَتَأْتُنَّنِى بِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يُحَاطَ بِكُمْ فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌ

Word by word

قَالَ qāla He said لَنْ lan Never أُرْسِلَهُۥ ur'silahu will I send him مَعَكُمْ maʿakum with you حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until تُؤْتُونِ tu'tūni you give to me مَوْثِقًۭا mawthiqan a promise مِّنَ mina by ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah لَتَأْتُنَّنِى latatunnanī that surely you will bring him to me بِهِۦٓ bihi that surely you will bring him to me إِلَّآ illā unless أَن an that يُحَاطَ yuḥāṭa you are surrounded بِكُمْ ۖ bikum you are surrounded فَلَمَّآ falammā And when ءَاتَوْهُ ātawhu they had given him مَوْثِقَهُمْ mawthiqahum their promise قَالَ qāla he said ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah عَلَىٰ ʿalā over مَا mā what نَقُولُ naqūlu we say وَكِيلٌۭ wakīlun (is) a Guardian

Transliteration

Qala lan orsilahu maAAakum hattatu/tooni mawthiqan mina Allahi lata/tunnanee bihi illaan yuhata bikum falamma atawhu mawthiqahum qalaAllahu AAala ma naqoolu wakeel

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

He said: I will not send him with you till ye give me an undertaking in the name of Allah that ye will bring him back to me, unless ye are surrounded. And when they gave him their undertaking he said: Allah is the Warden over what we say.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(Jacob) said: "Never will I send him with you until ye swear a solemn oath to me, in Allah's name, that ye will be sure to bring him back to me unless ye are yourselves hemmed in (and made powerless). And when they had sworn their solemn oath, he said: "Over all that we say, be Allah the witness and guardian!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( قال لن أرسله معكم حتى تؤتون موثقا من الله ) أي : تحلفون بالعهود والمواثيق ، ( لتأتنني به إلا أن يحاط بكم ) إلا أن تغلبوا كلكم ولا تقدرون على تخليصه .

( فلما آتوه موثقهم ) أكده عليهم فقال : ( الله على ما نقول وكيل )

قال ابن إسحاق : وإنما فعل ذلك; لأنه لم يجد بدا من بعثهم لأجل الميرة ، التي لا غنى لهم عنها ، فبعثه معهم .
