Quran 13:18

Surah Ar-Ra'd, Verse 18

لِلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَجَابُوا۟ لِرَبِّهِمُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لَهُۥ لَوْ أَنَّ لَهُم مَّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا وَمِثْلَهُۥ مَعَهُۥ لَٱفْتَدَوْا۟ بِهِۦٓ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ سُوٓءُ ٱلْحِسَابِ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمِهَادُ

Word by word

لِلَّذِينَ lilladhīna For those who ٱسْتَجَابُوا۟ is'tajābū responded لِرَبِّهِمُ lirabbihimu to their Lord ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ l-ḥus'nā (is) the bliss وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And for those who لَمْ lam (did) not يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ yastajībū respond لَهُۥ lahu to Him لَوْ law if أَنَّ anna that لَهُم lahum they had مَّا mā whatever فِى fī (is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth جَمِيعًۭا jamīʿan all وَمِثْلَهُۥ wamith'lahu and like of it مَعَهُۥ maʿahu with it لَٱفْتَدَوْا۟ la-if'tadaw surely they would offer ransom بِهِۦٓ ۚ bihi with it أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those لَهُمْ lahum for them سُوٓءُ sūu (is) a terrible ٱلْحِسَابِ l-ḥisābi reckoning وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ wamawāhum and their abode جَهَنَّمُ ۖ jahannamu (is) Hell وَبِئْسَ wabi'sa and wretched ٱلْمِهَادُ l-mihādu (is) the resting place

Transliteration

Lillatheena istajaboolirabbihimu alhusna wallatheena lamyastajeeboo lahu law anna lahum ma fee al-ardijameeAAan wamithlahu maAAahu laftadaw bihi ola-ikalahum soo-o alhisabi wama/wahum jahannamuwabi/sa almihad

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

For those who answered Allah's call is bliss; and for those who answered not His call, if they had all that is in the earth, and therewith the like thereof, they would proffer it as ransom. Such will have a woeful reckoning, and their habitation will be hell, a dire abode.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

For those who respond to their Lord, are (all) good things. But those who respond not to Him,- Even if they had all that is in the heavens and on earth, and as much more, (in vain) would they offer it for ransom. For them will the reckoning be terrible: their abode will be Hell,- what a bed of misery!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يخبر تعالى عن مآل السعداء والأشقياء فقال : ( للذين استجابوا لربهم ) أي : أطاعوا الله ورسوله ، وانقادوا لأوامره ، وصدقوا أخباره الماضية والآتية ، فلهم ) الحسنى ) وهو الجزاء الحسن كما قال تعالى مخبرا عن ذي القرنين أنه قال : ( قال أما من ظلم فسوف نعذبه ثم يرد إلى ربه فيعذبه عذابا نكرا وأما من آمن وعمل صالحا فله جزاء الحسنى وسنقول له من أمرنا يسرا ) [ الكهف : 87 ، 88 ] وقال تعالى : ( للذين أحسنوا الحسنى وزيادة ) [ يونس : 26 ] .

وقوله : ( والذين لم يستجيبوا له ) أي لم : يطيعوا الله ( لو أن لهم ما في الأرض جميعا ) أي : في الدار الآخرة ، لو أن يمكنهم أن يفتدوا من عذاب الله بملء الأرض ذهبا ومثله معه لافتدوا به ، ولكن لا يتقبل منهم; لأنه تعالى لا يقبل منهم يوم القيامة صرفا ولا عدلا ( أولئك لهم سوء الحساب ) أي : في الدار الآخرة ، أي : يناقشون على النقير والقطمير ، والجليل والحقير ، ومن نوقش الحساب عذب; ولهذا قال : ( ومأواهم جهنم وبئس المهاد )
