Surah An-Nahl, Verse 123

ثُمَّ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ أَنِ ٱتَّبِعْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

Word by word

ثُمَّ thumma Then أَوْحَيْنَآ awḥaynā We revealed إِلَيْكَ ilayka to you أَنِ ani that ٱتَّبِعْ ittabiʿ You follow مِلَّةَ millata (the) religion إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ib'rāhīma (of) Ibrahim حَنِيفًۭا ۖ ḥanīfan upright وَمَا wamā and not كَانَ kāna he was مِنَ mina of ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ l-mush'rikīna the polytheists

Transliteration

Thumma awhayna ilayka aniittabiAA millata ibraheema haneefan wama kanamina almushrikeen

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And afterward We inspired thee (Muhammad, saying): Follow the religion of Abraham, as one by nature upright. He was not of the idolaters.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

So We have taught thee the inspired (Message), "Follow the ways of Abraham the True in Faith, and he joined not gods with Allah."

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( ثم أوحينا إليك أن اتبع ملة إبراهيم حنيفا ) أي : ومن كماله وعظمته وصحة توحيده وطريقه أنا أوحينا إليك - يا خاتم الرسل وسيد الأنبياء - : ( أن اتبع ملة إبراهيم حنيفا وما كان من المشركين ) كما قال : في " الأنعام " : ( قل إنني هداني ربي إلى صراط مستقيم دينا قيما ملة إبراهيم حنيفا وما كان من المشركين ) [ الأنعام : 161 ] ثم قال تعالى منكرا على اليهود .
