Quran 16:63

Surah An-Nahl, Verse 63

تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ فَهُوَ وَلِيُّهُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Word by word

تَٱللَّهِ tal-lahi By Allah لَقَدْ laqad certainly أَرْسَلْنَآ arsalnā We have sent إِلَىٰٓ ilā to أُمَمٍۢ umamin nations مِّن min before you قَبْلِكَ qablika before you فَزَيَّنَ fazayyana but made fair-seeming لَهُمُ lahumu to them ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ l-shayṭānu the Shaitaan أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ aʿmālahum their deeds فَهُوَ fahuwa So he وَلِيُّهُمُ waliyyuhumu (is) their ally ٱلْيَوْمَ l-yawma today وَلَهُمْ walahum and for them عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment أَلِيمٌۭ alīmun painful

Transliteration

Tallahi laqad arsalnaila omamin min qablika fazayyana lahumu ashshaytanuaAAmalahum fahuwa waliyyuhumu alyawma walahum AAathabunaleem

Translations

By Allah, We verily sent messengers unto the nations before thee, but the devil made their deeds fairseeming unto them. So he is their patron this day, and theirs will be a painful doom.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

By Allah, We (also) sent (Our messengers) to Peoples before thee; but Satan made, (to the wicked), their own acts seem alluring: He is also their patron today, but they shall have a most grievous penalty.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ذكر تعالى أنه أرسل إلى الأمم الخالية رسلا فكذبت الرسل ، فلك يا محمد في إخوانك من المرسلين أسوة ، فلا يهيدنك تكذيب قومك لك ، وأما المشركون الذين كذبوا الرسل ، فإنما حملهم على ذلك تزيين الشيطان لهم ما فعلوه ، ( فهو وليهم اليوم ) أي : هم تحت العقوبة والنكال ، والشيطان وليهم ، ولا يملك لهم خلاصا ، ولا صريخ لهم ولهم عذاب أليم .
