Quran 16:73

Surah An-Nahl, Verse 73

وَيَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَمْلِكُ لَهُمْ رِزْقًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ شَيْـًٔا وَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

Word by word

وَيَعْبُدُونَ wayaʿbudūna And they worship مِن min other than دُونِ dūni other than ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah مَا mā which لَا lā not يَمْلِكُ yamliku possesses لَهُمْ lahum for them رِزْقًۭا riz'qan any provision مِّنَ mina from ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ wal-arḍi and the earth شَيْـًۭٔا shayan [anything] وَلَا walā and not يَسْتَطِيعُونَ yastaṭīʿūna they are able

Transliteration

WayaAAbudoona min dooni Allahi mala yamliku lahum rizqan mina assamawatiwal-ardi shay-an wala yastateeAAoon

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And they worship beside Allah that which owneth no provision whatsoever for them from the heavens or the earth, nor have they (whom they worship) any power.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

And worship others than Allah,- such as have no power of providing them, for sustenance, with anything in heavens or earth, and cannot possibly have such power?

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى إخبارا عن المشركين الذين عبدوا معه غيره ، مع أنه هو المنعم المتفضل الخالق الرازق وحده لا شريك له ، ومع هذا يعبدون من دونه من الأصنام والأنداد والأوثان ( ما لا يملك لهم رزقا من السماوات والأرض شيئا ) أي : لا يقدر على إنزال مطر ولا إنبات زرع ولا شجر ، ولا يملكون ذلك ، أي : ليس لهم ذلك ولا يقدرون عليه لو أرادوه
