Quran 17:4

Surah Al-Israa, Verse 4

وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ لَتُفْسِدُنَّ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَلَتَعْلُنَّ عُلُوًّا كَبِيرًا

Word by word

وَقَضَيْنَآ waqaḍaynā And We decreed إِلَىٰ ilā for بَنِىٓ banī (the) Children إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ is'rāīla (of) Israel فِى fī in ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ l-kitābi the Book لَتُفْسِدُنَّ latuf'sidunna Surely you will cause corruption فِى fī in ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth مَرَّتَيْنِ marratayni twice وَلَتَعْلُنَّ walataʿlunna and surely you will reach عُلُوًّۭا ʿuluwwan haughtiness كَبِيرًۭا kabīran great

Transliteration

Waqadayna ila banee isra-eelafee alkitabi latufsidunna fee al-ardi marratayniwalataAAlunna AAuluwwan kabeera

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Scripture: Ye verily will work corruption in the earth twice, and ye will become great tyrants.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

And We gave (Clear) Warning to the Children of Israel in the Book, that twice would they do mischief on the earth and be elated with mighty arrogance (and twice would they be punished)!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى : إنه قضى إلى بني إسرائيل في الكتاب ، أي : تقدم إليهم وأخبرهم في الكتاب الذي أنزله عليهم أنهم سيفسدون في الأرض مرتين ويعلون ‌‌علوا كبيرا ، أي : يتجبرون ويطغون ويفجرون على الناس كما قال تعالى : ( وقضينا إليه ذلك الأمر أن دابر هؤلاء مقطوع مصبحين ) [ الحجر : 66 ] أي : تقدمنا إليه وأخبرناه بذلك وأعلمناه به .
