Quran 17:54

Surah Al-Israa, Verse 54

رَّبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِن يَشَأْ يَرْحَمْكُمْ أَوْ إِن يَشَأْ يُعَذِّبْكُمْ وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكِيلًا

Word by word

رَّبُّكُمْ rabbukum Your Lord أَعْلَمُ aʿlamu (is) most knowing بِكُمْ ۖ bikum of you إِن in If يَشَأْ yasha He wills يَرْحَمْكُمْ yarḥamkum He will have mercy on you أَوْ aw or إِن in if يَشَأْ yasha He wills يُعَذِّبْكُمْ ۚ yuʿadhib'kum He will punish you وَمَآ wamā And not أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ arsalnāka We have sent you عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim over them وَكِيلًۭا wakīlan (as) a guardian

Transliteration

Rabbukum aAAlamu bikum in yasha/ yarhamkumaw in yasha/ yuAAaththibkum wama arsalnakaAAalayhim wakeela

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Your Lord is Best Aware of you. If He will, He will have mercy on you, or if He will, He will punish you. We have not sent thee (O Muhammad) as a warden over them.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

It is your Lord that knoweth you best: If He please, He granteth you mercy, or if He please, punishment: We have not sent thee to be a disposer of their affairs for them.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول الله تعالى ( ربكم أعلم بكم ) أيها الناس من يستحق منكم الهداية ومن لا يستحق ( إن يشأ يرحمكم ) بأن يوفقكم لطاعته والإنابة إليه ( أو إن يشأ يعذبكم وما أرسلناك ) يا محمد ( عليهم وكيلا ) أي إنما أرسلناك نذيرا فمن أطاعك دخل الجنة ومن عصاك دخل النار
