Quran 17:58

Surah Al-Israa, Verse 58

وَإِن مِّن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا نَحْنُ مُهْلِكُوهَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُوهَا عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا كَانَ ذَٰلِكَ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مَسْطُورًا

Word by word

وَإِن wa-in And not مِّن min (is) any قَرْيَةٍ qaryatin town إِلَّا illā but نَحْنُ naḥnu We مُهْلِكُوهَا muh'likūhā (will) destroy it قَبْلَ qabla before يَوْمِ yawmi (the) Day ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection أَوْ aw or مُعَذِّبُوهَا muʿadhibūhā punish it عَذَابًۭا ʿadhāban with a punishment شَدِيدًۭا ۚ shadīdan severe كَانَ kāna That is ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That is فِى fī in ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ l-kitābi the Book مَسْطُورًۭا masṭūran written

Transliteration

Wa-in min qaryatin illa nahnumuhlikooha qabla yawmi alqiyamati aw muAAaththiboohaAAathaban shadeedan kana thalika fee alkitabimastoora

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

There is not a township but We shall destroy it ere the Day of Resurrection, or punish it with dire punishment. That is set forth in the Book (of Our decrees).

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

There is not a population but We shall destroy it before the Day of Judgment or punish it with a dreadful Penalty: that is written in the (eternal) Record.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

هذا إخبار من الله عز وجل بأنه قد حتم وقضى بما قد كتبه عنده في اللوح المحفوظ أنه ما من قرية إلا سيهلكها بأن يبيد أهلها جميعهم أو يعذبهم ( عذابا شديدا ) إما بقتل أو ابتلاء بما يشاء وإنما يكون ذلك بسبب ذنوبهم وخطاياهم كما قال عن الأمم الماضين ( وما ظلمناهم ولكن ظلموا أنفسهم ) [ هود 101 ] وقال تعالى ) وكأين من قرية عتت عن أمر ربها ورسله فحاسبناها حسابا شديدا وعذبناها عذابا نكرا فذاقت وبال أمرها وكان عاقبة أمرها خسرا ) [ الطلاق 7 ، 8 ]
