Quran 18:58

Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 58

وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ذُو ٱلرَّحْمَةِ لَوْ يُؤَاخِذُهُم بِمَا كَسَبُوا۟ لَعَجَّلَ لَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابَ بَل لَّهُم مَّوْعِدٌ لَّن يَجِدُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦ مَوْئِلًا

Word by word

وَرَبُّكَ warabbuka And your Lord ٱلْغَفُورُ l-ghafūru (is) the Most Forgiving ذُو dhū Owner ٱلرَّحْمَةِ ۖ l-raḥmati (of) the Mercy لَوْ law If يُؤَاخِذُهُم yuākhidhuhum He were to seize them بِمَا bimā for what كَسَبُوا۟ kasabū they have earned لَعَجَّلَ laʿajjala surely, He (would) have hastened لَهُمُ lahumu for them ٱلْعَذَابَ ۚ l-ʿadhāba the punishment بَل bal But لَّهُم lahum for them مَّوْعِدٌۭ mawʿidun (is) an appointment لَّن lan never يَجِدُوا۟ yajidū they will find مِن min other than it دُونِهِۦ dūnihi other than it مَوْئِلًۭا mawilan an escape

Transliteration

Warabbuka alghafooru thoo arrahmatilaw yu-akhithuhum bima kasaboo laAAajjalalahumu alAAathaba bal lahum mawAAidun lan yajidoo mindoonihi maw-ila

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Thy Lord is the Forgiver, Full of Mercy. If He took them to task (now) for what they earn, He would hasten on the doom for them; but theirs is an appointed term from which they will find no escape.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

But your Lord is Most forgiving, full of Mercy. If He were to call them (at once) to account for what they have earned, then surely He would have hastened their punishment: but they have their appointed time, beyond which they will find no refuge.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( وربك الغفور ذو الرحمة ) أي : ربك - يا محمد - غفور ذو رحمة واسعة ، ( لو يؤاخذهم بما كسبوا لعجل لهم العذاب ) ، كما قال : ( ولو يؤاخذ الله الناس بما كسبوا ما ترك على ظهرها من دابة ) [ فاطر : 45 ] ، وقال : ( وإن ربك لذو مغفرة للناس على ظلمهم وإن ربك لشديد العقاب ) [ الرعد : 6 ] . والآيات في هذا كثيرة .

ثم أخبر أنه يحلم ويستر ويغفر ، وربما هدى بعضهم من الغي إلى الرشاد ، ومن استمر منهم فله يوم يشيب فيه الوليد ، وتضع كل ذات حمل حملها ؛ ولهذا قال : ( بل لهم موعد لن يجدوا من دونه موئلا ) أي : ليس لهم عنه محيد ولا محيص ولا معدل .
