Quran 18:59

Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 59

وَتِلْكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ أَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا۟ وَجَعَلْنَا لِمَهْلِكِهِم مَّوْعِدًا

Word by word

وَتِلْكَ watil'ka And these ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ l-qurā [the] towns أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ahlaknāhum We destroyed them لَمَّا lammā when ظَلَمُوا۟ ẓalamū they wronged وَجَعَلْنَا wajaʿalnā and We made لِمَهْلِكِهِم limahlikihim for their destruction مَّوْعِدًۭا mawʿidan an appointed time

Transliteration

Watilka alqura ahlaknahum lammathalamoo wajaAAalna limahlikihim mawAAida

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And (all) those townships! We destroyed them when they did wrong, and We appointed a fixed time for their destruction.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Such were the populations we destroyed when they committed iniquities; but we fixed an appointed time for their destruction.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

وقوله : ( وتلك القرى أهلكناهم لما ظلموا ) أي : الأمم السالفة والقرون الخالية أهلكناهم بسبب كفرهم وعنادهم ( وجعلنا لمهلكهم موعدا ) أي : جعلناه إلى مدة معلومة ووقت [ معلوم ] معين ، لا يزيد ولا ينقص ، أي : وكذلك أنتم أيها المشركون ، احذروا أن يصيبكم ما أصابهم ، فقد كذبتم أشرف رسول وأعظم نبي ، ولستم بأعز علينا منهم ، فخافوا عذابي ونذر .
