Quran 18:63

Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 63

قَالَ أَرَءَيْتَ إِذْ أَوَيْنَآ إِلَى ٱلصَّخْرَةِ فَإِنِّى نَسِيتُ ٱلْحُوتَ وَمَآ أَنسَىٰنِيهُ إِلَّا ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَهُۥ وَٱتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُۥ فِى ٱلْبَحْرِ عَجَبًا

Word by word

قَالَ qāla He said أَرَءَيْتَ ara-ayta Did you see إِذْ idh when أَوَيْنَآ awaynā we retired إِلَى ilā to ٱلصَّخْرَةِ l-ṣakhrati the rock فَإِنِّى fa-innī Then indeed, I نَسِيتُ nasītu [I] forgot ٱلْحُوتَ l-ḥūta the fish وَمَآ wamā And not أَنسَىٰنِيهُ ansānīhu made me forget it إِلَّا illā except ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ l-shayṭānu the Shaitaan أَنْ an that أَذْكُرَهُۥ ۚ adhkurahu I mention it وَٱتَّخَذَ wa-ittakhadha And it took سَبِيلَهُۥ sabīlahu its way فِى fī into ٱلْبَحْرِ l-baḥri the sea عَجَبًۭا ʿajaban amazingly

Transliteration

Qala araayta ith awaynaila assakhrati fa-innee naseetu alhootawama ansaneehu illa ashshaytanuan athkurahu wattakhatha sabeelahu fee albahriAAajaba

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

He said: Didst thou see, when we took refuge on the rock, and I forgot the fish - and none but Satan caused me to forget to mention it - it took its way into the waters by a marvel.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

He replied: "Sawest thou (what happened) when we betook ourselves to the rock? I did indeed forget (about) the Fish: none but Satan made me forget to tell (you) about it: it took its course through the sea in a marvellous way!"

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قال : ( أرأيت إذ أوينا إلى الصخرة فإني نسيت الحوت وما أنسانيه إلا الشيطان أن أذكره ) قال قتادة : وقرأ ابن مسعود : [ " وما أنسانيه أن أذكره إلا الشيطان ] ؛ ولهذا قال : ( واتخذ سبيله ) أي : طريقه
