Quran 2:51

Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 51

وَإِذْ وَٰعَدْنَا مُوسَىٰٓ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ ٱلْعِجْلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ وَأَنتُمْ ظَٰلِمُونَ

Word by word

وَإِذْ wa-idh And when وَٰعَدْنَا wāʿadnā We appointed مُوسَىٰٓ mūsā (for) Musa أَرْبَعِينَ arbaʿīna forty لَيْلَةًۭ laylatan nights ثُمَّ thumma Then ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ ittakhadhtumu you took ٱلْعِجْلَ l-ʿij'la the calf مِنۢ min from بَعْدِهِۦ baʿdihi after him وَأَنتُمْ wa-antum and you ظَـٰلِمُونَ ẓālimūna (were) wrongdoers

Transliteration

Wa-ith waAAadna moosaarbaAAeena laylatan thumma ittakhathtumu alAAijla minbaAAdihi waantum thalimoon

Translations

And when We did appoint for Moses forty nights (of solitude), and then ye chose the calf, when he had gone from you, and were wrong-doers.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

And remember We appointed forty nights for Moses, and in his absence ye took the calf (for worship), and ye did grievous wrong.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

يقول تعالى : واذكروا نعمتي عليكم في عفوي عنكم ، لما عبدتم العجل بعد ذهاب موسى لميقات ربه ، عند انقضاء أمد المواعدة ، وكانت أربعين يوما ، وهي المذكورة في الأعراف ، في قوله تعالى : ( وواعدنا موسى ثلاثين ليلة وأتممناها بعشر ) [ الأعراف : 142 ] قيل : إنها ذو القعدة بكماله وعشر من ذي الحجة ، وكان ذلك بعد خلاصهم من قوم فرعون وإنجائهم من البحر .
