Quran 20:117

Surah Taa-Haa, Verse 117

فَقُلْنَا يَٰٓـَٔادَمُ إِنَّ هَٰذَا عَدُوٌّ لَّكَ وَلِزَوْجِكَ فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقَىٰٓ

Word by word

فَقُلْنَا faqul'nā Then We said يَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ yāādamu O Adam إِنَّ inna Indeed هَـٰذَا hādhā this عَدُوٌّۭ ʿaduwwun (is) an enemy لَّكَ laka to you وَلِزَوْجِكَ walizawjika and to your wife فَلَا falā So not يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا yukh'rijannakumā (let) him drive you both مِنَ mina from ٱلْجَنَّةِ l-janati Paradise فَتَشْقَىٰٓ fatashqā so (that) you would suffer

Transliteration

Faqulna ya adamu innahatha AAaduwwun laka walizawjika falayukhrijannakuma mina aljannati fatashqa

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Therefor we said: O Adam! This is an enemy unto thee and unto thy wife, so let him not drive you both out of the Garden so that thou come to toil.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Then We said: "O Adam! verily, this is an enemy to thee and thy wife: so let him not get you both out of the Garden, so that thou art landed in misery.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

( فقلنا يا آدم إن هذا عدو لك ولزوجك ) يعني : حواء ، عليهما السلام ( فلا يخرجنكما من الجنة فتشقى ) أي : إياك أن يسعى في إخراجك منها ، فتتعب وتعنى وتشقى في طلب رزقك ، فإنك هاهنا في عيش رغيد هنيء ، لا كلفة ولا مشقة .
