Quran 22:15

Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 15

مَن كَانَ يَظُنُّ أَن لَّن يَنصُرَهُ ٱللَّهُ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ فَلْيَمْدُدْ بِسَبَبٍ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ ثُمَّ لْيَقْطَعْ فَلْيَنظُرْ هَلْ يُذْهِبَنَّ كَيْدُهُۥ مَا يَغِيظُ

Word by word

مَن man Whoever كَانَ kāna [is] يَظُنُّ yaẓunnu thinks أَن an that لَّن lan not يَنصُرَهُ yanṣurahu Allah will help him ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah will help him فِى fī in ٱلدُّنْيَا l-dun'yā the world وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ wal-ākhirati and the Hereafter فَلْيَمْدُدْ falyamdud then let him extend بِسَبَبٍ bisababin a rope إِلَى ilā to ٱلسَّمَآءِ l-samāi the sky ثُمَّ thumma then لْيَقْطَعْ l'yaqṭaʿ let him cut off فَلْيَنظُرْ falyanẓur then let him see هَلْ hal whether يُذْهِبَنَّ yudh'hibanna will remove كَيْدُهُۥ kayduhu his plan مَا mā what يَغِيظُ yaghīẓu enrages

Transliteration

Man kana yathunnu anlan yansurahu Allahu fee addunya wal-akhiratifalyamdud bisababin ila assama-i thummaliyaqtaAA falyanthur hal yuthhibannakayduhu ma yagheeth

Translations

Pickthall — Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Whoso is wont to think (through envy) that Allah will not give him (Muhammad) victory in the world and the Hereafter (and is enraged at the thought of his victory), let him stretch a rope up to the roof (of his dwelling), and let him hang himself. Then let him see whether his strategy dispelleth that whereat he rageth!.

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

If any think that Allah will not help him (His Messenger) in this world and the Hereafter, let him stretch out a rope to the ceiling and cut (himself) off: then let him see whether his plan will remove that which enrages (him)!

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

قال ابن عباس : من كان يظن أن لن ينصر الله محمدا صلى الله عليه وسلم في الدنيا والآخرة ، ( فليمدد بسبب ) أي : بحبل ) إلى السماء ) أي : سماء بيته ، ( ثم ليقطع ) يقول : ثم ليختنق به . وكذا قال مجاهد ، وعكرمة ، وعطاء ، وأبو الجوزاء ، وقتادة ، وغيرهم .

وقال عبد الرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم : ( فليمدد بسبب إلى السماء ) أي : ليتوصل إلى بلوغ السماء ، فإن النصر إنما يأتي محمدا من السماء ، ( ثم ليقطع ) ذلك عنه ، إن قدر على ذلك .

وقول ابن عباس وأصحابه أولى وأظهر في المعنى ، وأبلغ في التهكم; فإن المعنى : من ظن أن الله ليس بناصر محمدا وكتابه ودينه ، فليذهب فليقتل نفسه ، إن كان ذلك غائظه ، فإن الله ناصره لا محالة ، قال الله تعالى : ( إنا لننصر رسلنا والذين آمنوا في الحياة الدنيا ويوم يقوم الأشهاد . يوم لا ينفع الظالمين معذرتهم ولهم اللعنة ولهم سوء الدار ) [ غافر : 51 ، 52 ] ; ولهذا قال : ( فلينظر هل يذهبن كيده ما يغيظ )

قال السدي : يعني : من شأن محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم .

وقال عطاء الخراساني : فلينظر هل يشفي ذلك ما يجد في صدره من الغيظ .
