Quran 22:2

Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 2

يَوْمَ تَرَوْنَهَا تَذْهَلُ كُلُّ مُرْضِعَةٍ عَمَّآ أَرْضَعَتْ وَتَضَعُ كُلُّ ذَاتِ حَمْلٍ حَمْلَهَا وَتَرَى ٱلنَّاسَ سُكَٰرَىٰ وَمَا هُم بِسُكَٰرَىٰ وَلَٰكِنَّ عَذَابَ ٱللَّهِ شَدِيدٌ

Word by word

يَوْمَ yawma (The) Day تَرَوْنَهَا tarawnahā you will see it تَذْهَلُ tadhhalu will forget كُلُّ kullu every مُرْضِعَةٍ mur'ḍiʿatin nursing mother عَمَّآ ʿammā that which أَرْضَعَتْ arḍaʿat she was nursing وَتَضَعُ wataḍaʿu and will deliver كُلُّ kullu every ذَاتِ dhāti pregnant woman حَمْلٍ ḥamlin pregnant woman حَمْلَهَا ḥamlahā her load وَتَرَى watarā and you will see ٱلنَّاسَ l-nāsa [the] mankind سُكَـٰرَىٰ sukārā intoxicated وَمَا wamā while not هُم hum they بِسُكَـٰرَىٰ bisukārā (are) intoxicated وَلَـٰكِنَّ walākinna but عَذَابَ ʿadhāba (the) punishment ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah شَدِيدٌۭ shadīdun (will be) severe

Transliteration

Yawma tarawnaha tathhalu kullumurdiAAatin AAamma ardaAAat watadaAAukullu thati hamlin hamlaha wataraannasa sukara wama hum bisukarawalakinna AAathaba Allahi shadeed

Translations

On the day when ye behold it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling and every pregnant one will be delivered of her burden, and thou (Muhammad) wilt see mankind as drunken, yet they will not be drunken, but the Doom of Allah will be strong (upon them).

Yusuf Ali — Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The Day ye shall see it, every mother giving suck shall forget her suckling-babe, and every pregnant female shall drop her load (unformed): thou shalt see mankind as in a drunken riot, yet not drunk: but dreadful will be the Wrath of Allah.

تفسير ابن كثير — Ismail ibn Kathir

ثم قال تعالى : ( يوم ترونها ) : هذا من باب ضمير الشأن; ولهذا قال مفسرا له : ( تذهل كل مرضعة عما أرضعت ) أي : تشتغل لهول ما ترى عن أحب الناس إليها ، والتي هي أشفق الناس عليه ، تدهش عنه في حال إرضاعها له; ولهذا قال : ( كل مرضعة ) ، ولم يقل : " مرضع " وقال : ( عما أرضعت ) أي : عن رضيعها قبل فطامه .

وقوله : ( وتضع كل ذات حمل حملها ) أي : قبل تمامه لشدة الهول ، ( وترى الناس سكارى ) وقرئ : " سكرى " أي : من شدة الأمر الذي [ قد ] صاروا فيه قد دهشت عقولهم ، وغابت أذهانهم ، فمن رآهم حسب أنهم سكارى ، ( وما هم بسكارى ولكن عذاب الله شديد ) .
